[h=1]Ericsson is now going to take its cut from iPhone and iPad sales[/h] December 21, 2015 Kishore Ganesh Leave a comment Edit
Companies have many different ways of making money. Some make money from hardware, and some make money by selling software. Yet others make money by licensing out their technology to everyone.
The latter is a very lucrative business, and companies like TiVo are sustained by this licensing industry. It’s so lucrative that companies are set up just to buy patents, sue companies using related technology and make money out of the whole thing.
Ericsson is a company that licenses out its cellular technology patents to various companies. However, it has been involved in cases against Apple involving this very technology, but Apple has folded and has now agreed to pay Ericsson an undisclosed amount upfront and a percentage of the money from iPhone and iPad sales that Apple makes from here on out
Ericsson makes around $1.5 billion per year from its licensing business. Since this dispute is settled, Ericsson can focus on collaborating with phone manufacturers for the research, development and deployment of new technologies. What do you think?
