[h=1]Mumbai nurse Aruna Shanbaug, who was in coma for 42 years, passes away[/h]
May 18, 2015

Aruna Shanbaug, the Mumbai nurse, who was raped by a hospital staff member in 1973 and has been in coma ever since, passed away this morning.

Doctors at Mumbai's state-run KEM Hospital, where she worked and was raped, said Shanbaug was suffering from pneumonia and was on ventilator support, but added that her condition is improving.

It is a great act of compassion that the hospital has borne the cost of her treatment and the attending nursed and doctors have looked after her for over forty years.

The following is the gist of report from NDTV.com

Quote

So thorough was the care she got over the four decades that she was bed-ridden, that Ms Shanbaug did not get bed sores, a fact noted by the Supreme Court in its landmark judgement of 2011, rejecting a petition to stop force feeding her.

The petition by author Pinky Virani, who wrote the book 'Aruna's Story,' to stop force-feeding her sparked a national debate on euthanasia. Former and present staff members and nurses at KEM Hospital strongly opposed it.

It seems the present law does not allow to escape from pain and trauma, even it goes on for decades. The law requires a debate whether the present form is in any way useful.

Dear RR ji,

That only she would be able to answer.

It could be this

Trainee nurse Christine Gomes proficiently administers the injection. Sister Upadhyay smiles her approval. Outside the door, Christine once again asks a question. 'Last one, Sister. Why is God making her suffer like this?'

...'According to us Hindus there are rebirths. Perhaps she is paying for what she did in her last life. Perhaps, like your Jesus Christ, she is paying for all our sins. And if none of these thoughts can give us any comfort, perhaps we must just finally believe there is no God. Aruna Shanbaug's plight is proof of it.'

Sad indeed... it brought a helpless sorrow to my mind.

The nurses who took care of her for all these years have shown what it is, to be a human.

What is the meaning of 'vegetative state'? Can the person in 'vegetative state' can respond?

One of my relatives met with an accident and was brain dead due to head injury.

He was moving his legs and hands now and then but the actions seemed to be involuntary, that is, without his control.

He only knows whether he suffered pain or not. And.... he can't share it with us!

In permanent vegetative state you are awake but not truly aware..It is one step better than coma..Aruna a nurse from Karnataka was in love with a fellow Brahmin doctor when she was attacked by a sweeper in Mumbai..She had to bear the cross for the past 42 years!
