I liked this article..Well thought out...Surprised to see this in The Hindu which was acting like a bete noire of Dr Swamy!

The Government should get out of temple management and hand over control to the Bakthas...

Freeing temples from state control - The Hindu

It is a good Article by Dr Swami. I would request all to read. But the solution in freeing the Temples from the Government Control lies in some one taking further action. That can be done by Dr Swami only.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

it is an interesting article. I read it this morning. the main points ,the politicians are not managing temple lands, buildings and other assets properly getting insufficient returns. they are not conserving heritage while renovating. they are using temple funds for benifit of govt officials ,providing swanky loaded cars, not paying priests a monthly wage and paying to security and govt officials managing temples.
they is equally mismanagement of places of worship of other religions . govt would like to stay away from them . double standards?
reading all this, the choice is between the devil and the deep sea. IMHO. govt should stay away as much as possible from temple affairs.supremecourt has finally ruled. other temple trustees can appeal to get rid of govt from temple premises.

There was a historical reason behind the creation of HRCE. though it was the work of a justice party govt, even rajaji approved of it. the socalled 'bhaktas' were looting the temple properties wholescale and these were all upper caste folks.

things may not be all perfect now, but there is an equalization process at work..the rich temples subsidize the not so well patronized ones, and pay for its upkeep and salaries. it is not right to say salaries are not being paid. that happens more in private temples than in HRCE managed ones.

there is room for improvement ofcourse. but then is that not true for all of india?

1. More important is usage of the Hundial money to patronize Churches and Mosques which no devotee wants

2. The so called trustee or takkar is a political appointment..Even atheists are appointed

3. Retrieving temple lands from usurpers is a priority...In Vadapalani area of Chennai there used to be a majestic temple tank of Vengeeswarar just opposite the Murugan temple..Now it has been colonized and land mafia has swallowed it...You cannot find an inch of this temple tank now..This can happen only with Government patronage!..Cannot happen if it were with the real Bakthas!

i dont think #1 is correct. please provide proof.

re temple lands being usurped, it was done on a large scale prior to govt take over. one group did it and these were all forward castes. now the other groups are following suit. both are wrong and needs to be righted.

lots of small temples would be abandoned, if these were not subsidized with income from the larger richer ones. it appears very difficult for folks to believe that brahmin trustees too cheated the temples. the fact is they did.
