Ghost Indian Airport
This ghost airport terminal in a remote desert city in India can accommodate hundreds of thousands of travellers a year, but it has never received a single passenger.
Despite being built nearly three years ago at a cost of £10.8million ($17million), the terminal in Jaisalmer, in India’s north-western Rajasthan state, remains closed and is beginning to show signs of decay.
Seats in the waiting lounge are covered in a thick layer of dust, walls are stained, pigeons nest in the roof and the bones of dead animals are scattered at the entrance.
With parking bays for three 180-seat planes, the empty terminal sits behind a fence and locked gate, and highlights the government’s failed gamble to capitalise on a surge in air travel.
Its baggage carousels have never been used, the check-in counters are closed, the VIP lounge sits in darkness and the only visitors are cleaners and security guards who have been hired to patrol the grounds.
The airport’s chief engineer said: ‘You should come here on your own. It's scary.’
