GOD AND their family

Dear Friends
I put forward extract of a discussion which i overheard on a train journey . Co passengers were talking about God and family. One was of the opinion that amoung Hindu leading Gods except for Rama all are having more than one wife. Also during the period of Chera chola Pandya (ie ruled by Kings) ruling king~s daughters/sisters were given as a token of building relationship or surrender value in warby the ruling Kings. And even the present rulers are having more than one wife. Is it legal (as per Hindu act) to have more than one wife? Are our present rulers becoming God? I request members to share your views.

Dear Subramanian,

Your post is somewhat disjointed. Assuming the statements about leading Hindu Gods to be true (not accepted), what is the relevance of Hindu act and present rulers becoming gods. If we say the present rulers are gods, they automatically go out of the purview of Hindu Law; if, on the other hand, they are still at the human level, the hindu law will apply.

I am under the impression that polygamy was prohibited by the Hindu Law but those who had married before the date of effect of the Act could continue to have the wives legally. In fact we had a superior officer with two wives and several children and he used to frequently go to cinema with the entire family. So, when we talk about the present rulers, this point has also got to be confirmed.

The laws relating to polygamy comes into play only when the spouse initiates it In practice either silenced by intimidation or out of court compensation. Jambu
