In the image above is Shila Ghosh, an 83-year-old woman who lives in Pali in West Bengal, a state in the eastern region of India and is the nation’s fourth-most populous.

Her only son had heart ailment and passed away a few months ago. To make ends meet, Shila now works. Every evening, Shila comes from Pali to Kolkata to sell chips.

When asked if she has a problem in travelling, she weakly smiled and said: “No, the bus gets me here and my health is not that bad”.
Circumstances could have easily forced her to beg but her dignity and respect is everything for her, she is determined to work until the end of her life rather than to beg on the streets.

When we go on complaining, let us remember her….. she chose to solve her problems on her own for as they say God helps them those who help themselves.

Don’t worry, Shila is being helped. Although she refuses donations and prefers to make her own living, many people found ways to help without making her feel dependent on anyone i.e. purchase more chips from her… some are also helping her to build a kiosk

Dear PJ,

"God" does not seem to have helped this poor old woman, but she perhaps does not expect anything from God. She is helping herself, period. But if one goes down into the lowest strata of indian society one will find many, many such examples. These people know and realize that the "god" concept is a pure myth and each one of us has to face (and, if necessary, fight our way) through life. Life can be very cruel in some cases; reasons we don't know.

It is indeed God's gift if we are able to be in our complete senses including the ability to see and hear and be independent of others in ripe old age!

If not, i.e. if someone in their ripe old age is having to depend on others and suffer indiginities of various kind, would that be a case where this God is withholding this "gift"? If the "gift" is for merit, then it is not a gift, it is earned.

Please don't expect gift from god, or blame god for your condition now. You earned both. It may sound harsh, but if you believe in Karma theory accept the results.

I don't know whether this is addressed to me or in general. If it is to me, then may I say that I do not find any god other than the life force pulsating inside this body and that is the best gift that "I" can have, if there is a real "I". If my condition becomes dependent on others even for bodily functions, then it is just that, as a result of my actions or Karma, this body has deteriorated to such an extent.

But if you have addressed it to all, then I have nothing to say, pl.

I am sorry sir, I liked your post and was supporting your stand, but added my 2 cents comment to it. It was directed towards all, and Mr. PJ in particular.
