Pranams to all,
As per the Svardharma, Brahmins are supposed to learn Vedhas, pratice and teach vedhas and lead a simple life. Vedhas are essence of Sanathana Dharma and believed to be not human being composition and directly revealed by Supreme Brahman which reveal eternal truth, etc etc. The importance and significance of Vedhas are inexplicable.

In this direction, number of Vedha Parasalas are established and brahmin boys are taught vedhams, agamam, puranams, etc. Good thing.

What is surprising is, we can see a Lady Doctor, Lady Engineer, Lady Cinema Director, Lady Bus Driver, Lady Conductor, etc etc. Women shine in all fields. They excel. But anyone of us seen Revathi Archagar, Parvathi Ganapadigal and Sumathi Sivachariar, so on and so forth. We can’t. Why….?

What prevent us to impart the Vedhas to Ladies? Why they are not allowed to learn, practice and teach vedhams. We have Hindi Teacher, Music Teacher (Vocal and instrumental), etc But we don’t have Vedic Teacher.

Our nightya karma requires us to performa Gayathri Japam. But they are not allowed to do that.

Why they are deprived such a unique vedham and thus derieve the benefits i.e. the eternal truth. Why is the ban? I hope those three days and childbearning should not be the disadvantage. When we say Mata, Pita, Guru Deivam, importance is given only to mother first. While so, why there is degeneration in gender?

God is fair enough by sharing half portion of his body (Two souls in one body) and identified as ‘Arthanaeerewarar’.

Is our act of preventing ladies learning Vedhams is justified? Is ladies learning vedham is ‘Adharma’?

With regards,

Dear Sir,

Ubahaya Bharati was the judge for the power packed duo Adi Shankara and Madana Mishra.

For a person to be a judge she should be having knowledge par excellence..so going by that example..it should be self explanatory that women learning Vedas or Vedanta is not Adharmic.

Examples of learned women of the past:

1)Ghosha

2)Lopamudra

3)Apala

4)Lomasha

5)Vishvara

6)Surya

7)Gargi

8)Maitreyi

As I always believe that God made things simple...we human restrict and impose rules on each other.

Just to add.....knowledge of any kind should not be a competition between men and women.

Both should be seen as experts in their respective fields..cos if one still wants to see the difference of male and females and if a male thinks he is better than a female or a female thinks she is better than a male..then it is of no use to study Vedas.

One who decides to study Vedas should bear in mind that gender and body is just a garment for the Atma and nothing more.

I am sure you are the reincarnation of

one of those great Vedic scholar women
or the ninth one - born much later than them. :clap2:

In our Vedic chanting class of 75 members,
hardly ten were men! :high5:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,

Dear VR ji,

I come with lots of flaws and imperfections..I might love to read on religion,Sanskrit etc but I certainly do not deserve the status you have given me.

I have a real long long long way to go and many more lives before I can even dream of being in that list.

How about a reincarnation after slight alteration??? :)

With regards,

Shri Balasubramani,

First of all, let me say very humbly, that you are beginning to tread the ultra-vires. There is a short story to illustrate that one's involvement and zeal in his work/duty should not go beyond the strictly allowable limits. From a few of your posts here so far, I got the impression that you are a temple-centric tabra who goes for "uzhavArappaNi", etc. But now, by taking up the case of women being taught the vedas and so on.

Since you start your post with (the rather unwelcome) statement :—

"Vedhas are essence of Sanathana Dharma and believed to be not human being composition and directly revealed by Supreme Brahman which reveal eternal truth, etc etc. The importance and significance of Vedhas are inexplicable.

it may be useful to learn that this prohibition is as per our scriptures. Once long back Indra killed Vritra. Since Vritra was a brahmana, the brahmahatya started chasing Indra. After a lot of tapas and efforts, Indra asks Brihaspati as to how this brahmahatthi can be got rid of. Brihaspati answers that only if someone willingly consents to share the dosha, it cannot be got rid of. Ultimately this dosha is shared by 1. Earth, 2. Trees, 3. Sea, 4. Ladies. Ladies get their menses as a result of this dosha and in turn, they got the boon that only they will be able to give birth to children but after bearing a lot of pain (again as a result of the brahmahatthi dosha). Since ladies are thus afflicted by brahmahatthi dosha, they are prohibited from even reciting the vedas or reading/reciting them. Hence, you see, this is how the essence of the sanatana dharma was being protected till now from getting polluted and destroyed as a result.

For a real believing brAhmaNan, even the very thought like this is sacrilege and hence a big sin.

As for the "brahmavadinis", they are exceptions only and exist to prove the rule.

Therefore, please discard all such irreligious thoughts from your mind and also sub-conscious so that all the punya you are trying to earn by going to temples, uzhavArappaNi, etc., do not go waste and you end up as a worm or some lowly creature in your next birth.

'Where is gender equality?' would have been a proper title for this thread! :decision:

P.S: Beware... TVK Sir!!

One cannot have his feet on two boats. If one is true to one's religion then he/she has to follow the tenets of that religion. Hinduism does not treat women on par with men who are considered to be better births. If gender equality is sought to be artificially built over the base of the so-called "Sanatana Dharma", the results will be queer.

Islam is more honest in this regard, I will say. And, man and woman cannot just be equal.

Sir, Thanx for the information and cautioning me. If you feel that I am crossing the limits, I am sorry Sir. My posting is aimed at to learn something and not to hurt anyone’s sentiments/feelings. In the interest of maintaining better relationship among Veterans and Super Moderator, etc I am closing this thread. Not a good day for me.

Sangomji,

I hope you were not serious about the above. I think modern Hindus believe that Hinduism is a progressive religion. Whatever the social norms were during the Vedic times or Ramayana times are not really relevant now. We cannot adopt an originalist approach and stand frozen in time. Such a religion will surely die.

I think in many houses, women take the lead in performing pujas and prayer. The values of the mother pass more easily to the children. If the woman of the house wants to chant the Geeta or the Vedas I can't see their husband objecting. Does any husband forbid the wife from being religious (as long as he is getting what he wants)?

Regarding Islam the less said the better. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the birthplace and chief sponsor of the religion, women are still treated like property and cannot drive, hold a job or study abroad without a male companion. Let them stay with their backward and medieval rules while the rest of the world marches forward.

Namaste Biswaji,

Sangomji's post (observations ? interpretations? inferences ?) about "sanatana dharmam" is correct ie daily rituals are prescribed (not optional) for men only and strictly prohibited for women.

Whether progressives hindus follow "sanatana dharmam" to the tee or not is altogether a different (debatable ? undebatable ?) topic.

Thanks,
Jai SiyaRaam

Logically one can not really believe the story that women get menses becos of the sin of Brahmana hatya by Indra.

Then what about menopause?? Moksha??

Going by that logic menopause has to be Moksha!LOL

No wonder women are prohibited from religious rites and rituals...we do not have to do anything...just wait for menopause and we are FREE!

BTW I was just wondering..this Indra story...he got cursed by Sage Gautama to have 1000 female genitals...I wonder what a monthly menstrual cycle Indra would have had? Ha Ha Ha

I feel some of these Puranas should be taken with pinch of salt....I wonder why there is no follow up to the Indra story...it only says from 1000 female genitals it got changed to 1000 eyes.

Why didn't anyone think of making up some story that the 1000 genitals remained and each month when Indra had his menses..each drop of blood that fell on earth gave rise to ferocious Rajasic beings called Raktha Yonis.. that became his army to fight asuras.

See even I am writing some Purana now...Indra Puranam(the untold version).

So same way...some nut must have written something along the way and we are supposed to believe it!LOL

Come on Renu,

All 'those' 1000 are not real ones! It is only an appearance to humiliate Indra, OK?

Otherwise his life would have been wasted, washing after each time he goes no 1. :pound:
