Our attachment to godmen and women is nothing new. Many of us who fancy ourselves as the ultimate rationalists have a guru tucked away somewhere. These spiritual psychologists tell us what we already know, but we feel a whole lot better for having heard it from a being we consider more evolved than our faulty, sinful selves. But, I am sure there is not one among you who has not been shocked and revolted to the core by the statements made by uber guru Asaram Bapu. The heroic victim who died after a horrific gang rape in Delhi could have avoided her fate, he said, if she had fallen at the feet of the rapists, invoked the appropriate mantras and called them brothers. If it was not so tragic, it would be laughable.

Here is a man who is considered almost divine by millions of followers. Here is a man who got away with no explanation as to why two young boys died in mysterious circumstances in his Ahmedabad ashram. Here is a man who the rich and powerful flock to for spiritual solace. Yet, when this enormously powerful man makes a statement that is so gross and insulting, he is given a very long rope by the law. He should, simply put, be thrown in the clink if a proper case can be made out against him.

We have seen for far too long that our godmen and women consider their 'divine' status as giving them immunity from the law. There is no doubt that many of them have done much good for the psychological and social well-being of society.

It would make a whole lot more sense if these spiritual leaders were to use their platforms to urge their followers to respect women. It would also help if they were a little more accountable about their vast empires and how they came into all this wealth and what they were doing with it. The excuse that religious or other sentiments will be hurt if we treat these godpersons like any other common and garden citizen is rubbish. Instead of being allowed to grandstand after his ugly remarks, Asaram Bapu should have been arrested for promoting violence against women.

We have earlier had the spectacle of a yoga guru joining a civil society movement and demanding accountability from the government. Nothing wrong with that. But we would also like a little more transparency about his meteoric rise from ordinary preacher to owner of private jets and islands abroad.

The Asaram Bapu issue will be a test case. The law must act and act decisively. No one can hide behind religious or other sentiments. I would have expected his followers, or at least the women among them, to rise in revolt and shun him. But since that has not happened and is not likely to, the law must bring him to account. The message should be quite clear - in god we certainly trust unless you happen to be an atheist. But we certainly don't have to swallow the twaddle dished out by the so-called intermediaries on earth. And for god sake, don't try a diet of gulab jamuns as the same godman who forbade insults to snakes prescribed. It may do no damage to your immortal soul but will certainly land your mortal body in hospital.

I agree with what is written. But the question is has the public shunned the politicaians who made equally outrageous comments? In fact every BJP leader who has opened his mouth seem to have put his foot into it. Congress leaders and our Khap leaders have not been far behind.

The message should be quite clear - whether we trust in god or are atheists, we certainly don't have to swallow the twaddle dished out by the so-called intermediaries and the contemporary full avataaras on earth.

I will slightly amend and give the above opinion. So long as our country engenders such sham personalities in the guise of religious gurus and godmen, etc., we have no scope to progress.

That is why I hold that we should look into the past (poorvaasramam) of each such person and filter out all those who could not live a normal person's life from this list. And it is also a widely known secret that if our government agencies do an impartial enquiry into the sources of funds of all such gurus/godmen/godwomen etc., many of them may land up in jail, because all this pomp and grandeur just does not come from donations by (gullible) devotees or other lawful means.

Hmm.. resembles to some extent my views on Gurus..

I have had a healthy distrust of all swamis/gurujis/ godmen/godwomen etc., who come seeking publicity and have an outfit (usually a tax-free donation trust) which is the milch cow for the person concerned. ASAP this swami/guruji/godman/godwoman proceeds to the western countries (this is a lesson taught by Vivekananda, imo), sets up his/her centre/s or Ashram/s there. Somehow, there seem to be enough gullible people with lots of money to spare on such swami/guruji/godman/godwoman, and these fellows come back very rich.

I think it is high time a movement against all such swami/guruji/godman/godwoman gets started.

I think all these Godmen and Godwomen should practice the paathamukh Asana (foot in mouth) 24x7 so that they need not be quoted at all anywhere!!

They seem to put their foot-in-mouth every time they open their mouth. Their mouth should be taped shut.

Okay same story again !!. Just because a few God men have got into controversy does not mean all are bad !! God men are as much required as psychologists in the modern world !! They provide the faith & support to common man & most of them are doing a great service !!.

Infestation of Termite is doing a service to the rotting trees, but when they attack the very termites destroy an antique art, they are a nuisance.

In tradition bound India, if someone claims to be able to exorcise ghosts, levitate or pull a gold chain out of thin air, it does not take long for him to become known as "godman". While many godmen are not confidence tricksters, there are numerous so-called "Miracles Babas" who are just out to get rich by duping as many people as fast as they can.

But Mumbai police are cracking down on the chariatans and have called for the help of group known as the All India Committee to Eradicate Superstitions and Blind Faith, to convince people special power is more often than not sleight of hand or illusion.

"The Campaign is meant to be an eye-opener. We want to put a complete stop to those posing as godmen. They are involved in outright cheating and violent acts." Joint commissioner of police for crime in Mumbai, S.S. Vagal said.

Vagal said the campaign, which includes public meetings and television programmes, had begun to show results.

"Certainly, we have been able to make an impact. Several people have voluntarily made complaints and we have nabbed at least 25 of the fake godmen" he said.

Activists say the "Miracle Babas" come to India's commercial hub from poorer parts of the country seeking their fortune by exploiting people's insecurities.

"Its easy money – without any investment. As long as fear exists among people such godmen will thrive," Said Narendra Bhabolkar, founder of the 20 year old committee that seeks to expose the tricksters.

A committee worker at a public gathering shows how a gold chain that looked as if it had been plucked out of the air had actually been tucked up a sleeve.

"It's simple. If you want people to bow down at you then you perform a trick," said well-known magician Anand Tayade, who is helping with the campaign against fraud.

"There's no such thing as performing miracles on this earth. These Godmen are unliked learned saints who renounce worldly life, give sermons and induce a feeling of positive energy. They are out to cheat gullible people to make money," Tayade said.

Many godmen call themselves "Tantriks" – those who follow the esoteric Hindu and Buddhist traditions of ritual and yoga.

In another demonstration, a man is clad in saffron robes and a false beard and seems to sit suspended in mid-air without any support but for a hand resting on a pole.

But a superstition-busting activists tells the hushed crowd of more than 100 people that that long garment actually hides a wooden seat fixed to the pole. Godmen claim to be able to perform miracles and solve just about any problem under the sun – from helping jilted lovers, or people with marriage and sexual problems, to those with job worries.

"It's the environment one grows up in that's usually responsible while others are looking for avenues to overcome stress in adversity" said Shyam Manav, another activist trying to educate people about superstition.

The Godmen charge anything from about 150 rupees ( RM11.50) up to millions of rupees, depending on the whole range of factors including what herbs and roots are provided as a potion. And people seeking help from all walks of life can fall prey to the
tricks. But while most godmen restrict themselves to relatively harmless fraud, others get caught up in much more sinister affairs,
including human sacrifice to appease "evil spirits"

In July, a nine year old boy was found dead on the out-skirts of Mumbai. A man told police he killed the boy after a godman told him doing so would save his troubled marriage. "We have intensified patrolling day and night to arrest fake
godmen. Another human sacrifice cannot take place," said assistant police
commissioner R.D. Jagtap.

While Mumbai Police say the fake godmen are becoming more scarce in the city, the activists campaigning against superstition are traveling further out to towns and villages to spread their message.

"We understand that blind practices cannot be ended easily. It will take generations. But our effort will continue," said committee to eradiate blind faith member and Bollywood actor Shreeram Lagoo

Some months back there was a post about a certain late prolific godman. It was removed. No surpises there. I wish we could all just be Hindus without resorting to godmen/women and even if one does, its ok to think of them as a guru of some sort , but to insist they are God incarnate is a bit much imo. Unfortunately/fortunately (depending on your pov) my nuclear family thus far never had the fortune/misfortune of anyone with any major illness that was willed away by said godman. Perhaps thats why we haven't fallen hook line and sinker...yet. I say yet because there is allegedly a sequel. I can't wait personally :)

You are right.
I must accept that there are gurus, who are teachers. You may or may not accept their interpretations of our scriptures.
But I do not believe in Godmen/Godwomen to be god incarnate on this earth concept.

Kum. amala,

I am not willing to accept any of these gurujis/swamis/godmen/godwomen, even as "teachers" as long as they are seen to be inviting publicity for themselves (and making money from such publicity). If any one of them is really a sanyasi (one who has renounced worldly desires) he/she should better live in some Ashram somewhere, manage his daily routine/life with whatever resources he can find locally and spend his life in activities like meditation/ samaadhi /brahmaananda experience, or at least strive to attain such state. Instead when such people, whether of their own accord, or under compulsion by some mafia which grows around such people right from their nascent stages as such guruji/swami/godman/godwoman, come out with some organizational outfit in their name, acquire sizeable area of prime property, build spacious Ashrams etc., and generally splash around their money and organizational mights, then one has to suspect their bonafides.

I read that Actor Rajnikanth makes an annual trip to places in the Himalayas which are very difficult to reach and has his spiritual teacher somewhere there. Perhaps there may be genuine gurus among such persons who are simply content to live in those inaccessible regions.

The sundry gurujis/swamis/godmen/godwomen who parade around our cities and also foreign countries, are all fake, imo.

As long as you have people willing to believe and volunteer time, money etc you will have godmen/women. Where do you start? with the people or the godmen/women? As Kunjuppu Ji said they probably fulfil a need. Personally i feel too many people want their God to be this tangible, real super human whom they can see, touch, talk to or hear. Its far easier than having some abstract God imo. So godmen/women will never cease to exist, unfortunately.

Some people need the leech to suck their blood, some needs their Vampires.
There is no telling people's taste. We the educated people need to expose these blood sucking leeches, and hope that we can wean away these misguided souls.

If we see people being skimmed off their home, family, and wealth and do nothing, we will be failing our civic duty. It is easy to look the other way when a crime is being committed. It is a brave act to intervene to stop a crime. Brave humans through out the world do just that. Please take a look at the CNN heroes.
