A Pushakaram takes place once in 12 years when Jupitar (Brishaspati) enters a particular zodiac. There are total of 12 rivers where Pushkaram takes place. Every 12th year Jupiter’s entry into the constellation Leo marks the Pushkaram for Godavari.

It is is widely believed that the rituals like snana (bath), dana (charity), japa (recitation), archana (worship) and dhyana (meditation),performed during Pushkaram bless the people in every sphere of their lives.

Why is Godavari Pushkaram held?

Godavari Pushkaram is held because it is believed that during the auspicious occasion all the gods, goddess, saints and other holy people take dip in the Godavari River. Thus the water is purified and those devotees taking holy dip during the period will be relieved from all sins. The period is also auspicious for performing Shradh and Tarpan for departed souls.
