Google's new chief executive Sundar Pichai used his first official visit to India Wednesday to outline plans to bring hundreds of millions of Indians online, including installing free wifi at railway stations.

The Indian-born Pichai said the first train station, Mumbai Central, would go online in January and the tech giant intended to cover 100 of India's stations by the end of 2016.

[h=1]Google CEO Sundar Pichai in India: 5 takeaways from first day of visit[/h]Google’s Indian-born CEO Sundar Pichai said on Wednesday the tech giant will use India as a testing ground for its products as it targets millions of consumers in the developing world set to move online in the next few years.

Here are five takeaways from Pichai’s engagements in Delhi on Wednesday:

1) New Google campus in Hyderabad

Google will build a new campus at Hyderabad and hire more people. The technology giant is working towards including as many people as possible in the use of internet in the country, and added the company will develop products in India that have global usage.

“We will ramp up our engineering investments at our Bangalore and Hyderabad facilities. We will also build a huge new campus in Hyderabad,” Pichai said.

2) Free high-speed WiFi at 100 train stations soon

Free WiFi being set up across 400 railway stations will be “highly reliable and hi-speed” with speeds higher than what an average internet user gets.
The network is being set up by Google in partnership with the Railways’ telecom wing, RailTel and Mumbai Central will be the first station to get the facility.

hi

india needs 24 hours uninterupted power/drinking water in railway stations............power needs to recharge everything

and drinking potable water needed.......not wifi.....

Sundar Pichai confessed to Sri ram college of commerce students that he could not get admission there when he was young.

He is making up for it by putting up wifi in railway stations, internet connectivity in villages, installing translation software in indian languages.

Classic example of american technology and marketing with tamil brahmins to spearhead the activity.

When americans smell money and market , they would do anything to be there for pushing their products.

Our tamil brahmin rejects in US are getting used to push american sales in india.

Lot many more would be in india in times to come as india grows rapidly.
