Why not ban it on hygiene ground in spite of public demand.
The practice of ‘Made Snana’ will from now on be altered, to allow devotees wishing to participate in the ritual, without being discriminated on the basis of caste.
According to a submission made by the Government before the High Court on Thursday, devotees will now be permitted to roll over plantain leaves containing offerings made to the deity in the sanctum sanctorum, instead of leftovers of people from certain section of the society.
The ritual, as practised till now at the Kukke Subramanya Temple, mandated that the devotees roll over plantain leaves containing leftover food of a people from certain higher sect.
In an affidavit presented before the Court, the Government agreed to ensure that the food will not be touched by people from any section and the practice will continue without any caste barriers. The Government was responding to a PIL seeking a ban on the practice. The PIL was filed in March this year by Nidumamidi Mutt pontiff and others.
