Here, Brahmins roll on plantain leaves

Old news, but in practice for 400 years. Who will go to court to stop this?

TUMKUR: This is something that will perplex opponents of the infamous 'Made Snana' ritual, which is facing a ban in Karnataka. For, in this case, the ritual can't be viewed as an atrocity against dalits going by the way it is held in Beteraya Swamy temple at Turuvekere in Tumkur district. Here, Brahmins roll on plantain leaves with leftovers of meals served to dalits.

Usually, the ritual in Kukke Subramanya and other temples has lower caste people roll over leaves in which Brahmins had their meals. While the ritual is practised mainly in Naga temples across the state, in Turuvekere, it happens in a Vishnu temple on March 6 every year.

The ritual has been on at Beteraya temple, which is under the muzrai department, for over 400 years now and attracts Brahmins from all over the state.

'Made Snana' is a 'harake' (an offering made for a wish). In this case, the offering is to roll on leftovers of food consumed by dalits. It is also believed that the ritual helps in curing skin diseases.

Several women and children were among the 600 Brahmins who took part in the ritual on Tuesday. "Good things have happened to me due to Made Snana. I wanted to be part of the ritual," said Ravi Narayan, one of the participants.

"We wait till dalits finish their meals on the temple premises and later roll on the plantain leaves," he added.

I am of the view that both these customs should be banned now.

As long as they roll only on left over food and as long as it is not forced but only done voluntarily I do not see any problem in this .

First and the foremost thing is ‘left over food’ attitude should be changed.

Why should one waste food? We get food stuff as a result of hard labour right from sowing; it hasto pass through different stages with the blessing of nature I mean, sufficient rain, water for irrigation, manure, fertilizer, pesticides, etc

In other developed countries they are very serious about wasting food stuff. I think it is prohibited.

And the age old practice of rolling over ‘left over food’ is another superstition which IMO richly deserves to be banned.

Why we need Court Orders for such practices, even if it is age old?

Going by the trend, it seems only court can set right things.

Is it such a hard stuff to get rid of age old practices?

Lot of age old practices which are considered to be good for the human being were discontinued abruptly without any court Order.

Why not this?

La Tomatina (Spanish pronunciation: [la tomaˈtina]) is a festival that is held in the Valencian town of Buñol, a town located 30 km from the Mediterranean, in which participants throw tomatoes and get involved in this tomato fight purely for fun. It is held on the last Wednesday of August, during the week of festivities of Buñol.

The tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown so as to reduce the risk of injury. The estimated number of tomatoes used is around 150,000 or over 40 metric tons.

Crazy people exist all over!

You cannot do it Germany I think.

what a destructive wish; when the innocent believers are indulging in healthy acts like mud bath, hot springs, sulphur tratment or ayurvedic oil cure.

this kind of intolerance is alien to sanatana dharma.

True...may be all(every caste) should lie down and let a steam roller go over everyone!

In the king and I, marlon brando sentences one boy to death for an assassination attempt - throwing a tomato.

Who said other countries don't waste food stuff? In the self service counters in the restaurants of U S of A, big trash cans are kept to

collect the wasted food! The food is thrown as trash and plates are kept for washing in another place. But there IS option for taking

home the left over food, in the restaurants where waiters serve the food. Thermocol boxes are given to pack the left over food.

for one last time be clear of what USA means. i dont want to sink into this plantain again!

here too unused food from serving dish can be packed for later consumption. we do it often.

I don't say U.S.A.

There are countries other than U.S.A. also.

And it is only here that you can see die-hard Fans of cinema stars pouring several liters of Milk on the Flex boards of their favorite hero on the date of release of latest movie while lot of children are starving for the same in the Hospitals.

May be there are Members who feel proud about the same!

We have only very few food items produced in abundance and most other items are scarce. But we have a 'throw-away'mentality which is unacceptable, especially when food is not so cheap.

In the west there are sort of festivals like people diving into sea of churned tomatoes and diving into mountains of chocolates. Shortage is dangerous and abundance is nasty. This being the case, market researchers in the west are worried about the dwindling births. They fear this will bottom out the baby food industry and others. Gone are going to be the days when Kerala joked one 'baby' free for 2 packs of 'farex'.

if we can ban castes ,rituals will also go off wit that

caste discrimination is something like aparteid .

brahmins are victims thesedays of reverse discrimination from other intermediate castes. Dalits at the other end of the caste spectrum are forced to change their

religion to escape discrimination.

is there anything positive for brahmins due to their caste in tamilnadu?

When I was young, I have seen people belonging to Brahmin community rolling over left over plantain leaves by Brahmin priests in Karur at a Hanumat Jayanthi function. What ever may be the reason for performing such rituals, the religious leaders should desist from encouraging such obnoxious rituals like 'made snana'.

There are quite a number of other kinds of dangerous unhealthy rituals followed in in the name of religion. In a news clipping I saw a dangerous ritual wherein small babies were tossed and caught as a நேர்த்திக்கடன் performed at Temples in some villages in Karnataka, (which has been banned by the Government now).

Brahmanyan,

I wonder who are dumb enough to let coconuts be broken on their heads?

There should be standardization of such practices by the government and ban rituals that are deem unhygienic and dangerous.

hi renu,

u saw the video by RR madam....

Dear Renu,

Some people are not only crazy but also dumb! :loco:

Dear RR ji,

But nothing beats the case I saw today..I had to treat someone screaming in pain claiming to be possessed with 4 ghosts.

So today I had to play both doc and real life Mataji in my advice to that person.

After hearing my Mataji speech the screaming stopped!
