Nine Beliefs of Hinduism
Our beliefs determine our thoughts and attitudes about life, which in turn direct our actions. By our actions, we create our destiny. Beliefs about sacred matters--God, soul and cosmos--are essential to one's approach to life. Hindus believe many diverse things, but there are a few bedrock concepts on which most Hindus concur. The following nine beliefs, though not exhaustive, offer a simple summary of Hindu spirituality.

Hindus believe in a one, all-pervasive Supreme Being who is both immanent and transcendent, both Creator and Unmanifest Reality.
Hindus believe in the divinity of the four Vedas, the world's most ancient scripture, and venerate the Agamas as equally revealed. These primordial hymns are God's word and the bedrock of Sanatana Dharma, the eternal religion.
Hindus believe that the universe undergoes endless cycles of creation, preservation and dissolution.
Hindus believe in karma, the law of cause and effect by which each individual creates his own destiny by his thoughts, words and deeds.
Hindus believe that the soul reincarnates, evolving through many births until all karmas have been resolved, and moksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth, is attained. Not a single soul will be deprived of this destiny.
Hindus believe that divine beings exist in unseen worlds and that temple worship, rituals, sacraments and personal devotionals create a communion with these devas and Gods.
Hindus believe that an enlightened master, or satguru, is essential to know the Transcendent Absolute, as are personal discipline, good conduct, purification, pilgrimage, self-inquiry, meditation and surrender in God.
Hindus believe that all life is sacred, to be loved and revered, and therefore practice ahimsa, noninjury, in thought, word and deed.
Hindus believe that no religion teaches the only way to salvation above all others, but that all genuine paths are facets of God's Light, deserving tolerance and understanding.

Hinduism, the world's oldest religion, has no beginning--it precedes recorded history. It has no human founder. It is a mystical religion, leading the devotee to personally experience the Truth within, finally reaching the pinnacle of consciousness where man and God are one. Hinduism has four main denominations--Saivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism and Smartism.

I agree with most of the assertion, but I have reservation about others.
For instance
Hindus believe that divine beings exist in unseen worlds and that temple worship, rituals, sacraments and personal devotionals create a communion with these devas and Gods.
I do not have faith in rituals and demigods.
But overall I like this article.

Most of those Hindus who believe the above list have not understood Hinduism per se. A Hindu is not required to believe any from that list.

As per 'kula deivam', that practice possibly continues from 'pre-hindu' period. Hinduism is not timeless. It does have a beginning.

When one looks at this on the whole, it would be quite hard to find the roots. But if a particular section of the demographic is chosen, the history for that particular region can be traced back.

sanathana dharma is the name ...it is not religion but ancient dharma or ancient dharmic practices not related to any religion..after the advent of english only HINDUISM came into existence

this is more the north indian pov.

in tamil nadu, we have the rural deities like madurai veeran, sudalai maadan, and innumerable ammans and bhagavathis (in kerala). are these to be excluded from 'hinduism' because they are not in khandlewal's list.

.. and people can argue to be hindus even if they are the vilest critics of the vedas or purusha shukta.

i think, the area is too complext to be defined by a set of parameters. let us be all inclusive ...

hi

hi

infact hinduism 6 main denominations.....SAIVISM....VAISHANAVISM......SAAKTHAM....SAOURAM.....KAUMARAM ...GAANAPATHYAM...

smatism is separate sub category of mixer of saivism and vaishnavism.....

When we say sanathan dharma, it includes 4 ashramams Brahmacharya, Gruhasta, vanaprasta and sanyasa...that is one has to remain celibate till he/she finishes education, get married (legally have proper progeny (not born out of kama but out of love or understanding the purpose of procreation so that they will deliver unselfishly to the society (by four varnas brahmins (not present day brahmins) , who live and sacrifice their lives for others (PURELY SATVIC), kshatriya (no present day rajputs or punjabis or army men but just like jawans who die and protect the honour of the country and people (selflessly braving all odds including writhing in pain and deep injuries in the battle field itself just like duryadona, abimanu, bishma, etc.,), VAISYA (WHO ARE CREATORS, PROTECTORS AND GROWERS OF WEALTH - not like present day selfish businessman) and KSUDURA (WHO CARRY OUT THE ORDERS OF OTHERS (JUST LIKE PRESENT DAY OFFICE EXECUTIVES BUT RESPECTED BY OTHERS AS THE LIMB OF SOCIETY)..These are all pure qualities and now got mixed up and we have a population of all four (MAY BE SOME ASIANS (INTELLECTUALS), WESTERNERS (WARRIORS), CHINESE (BUSINESS PEOPLE - YELLOW ORIGIN) AND BLACK (NEGROES IN SOME PARTS OF AFRICA WITHOUT WESTERN INFLUENCE) , if they come again (may be we can revive and stop the gene degradation which occurred and let to a hybrid variety which spoiled our own land and the society itself..now we can't restore to original glory but we can revive the type of genes from other countries through gene mix- this may seem odd for some one since it will take a very long time process) but it will definitely help the country to reach some of the lost glories economically, socially and militarily (MAY BE IF NOT PROPER GENE TRAITS MIXING IT MAY LEAD TO DETEORIATION ALSO..it depends on right gene mix (JUST LIKE USA , AUSTRALIA and other countries MALAYSIA, SINGAPORE WHERE OTHER RACES EXIST).
I HOPE MOST OF THE MEMBERS WON'T AGREE WITH MY VIEW NOW BUT MAY REALIZE LATER (AS USUAL):scared:
