It was George Bernard Shaw who told
"It shows how dangerous it is to be too good."
on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi on 30th January, 1948.
Let me reminiscent the day.
I remember the day clearly. I was sixteen year old student. As usual, I was waiting for evening news from AIR. Suddenly just at five minutes before six, the station went off. An announcement came to wait for an important announcement.Which was followed by another one in the baritone voice of Melville de Mellow " All India Radio regret to announce the death of Mahatma Gandhi". I cried out the news to my father and mother. For the first time I saw tears welling in the eyes of my father, who was a staunch follower of Mahatma. Then the details of his assassination came in the Radio along with Bhajans and music. Rest is History.
My uncle who had gone to railway station to catch Bluemountain Express returned home informed us that all trains were cancelled due to the death of Gandhiji.
Here is the first person account of "The Last Journey" of Mahatma described by none other than the famous AIR Commentator
- Melville de Mellow:
Reminiscences Of Gandhi : The Last Journey
It is indeed surprising, except for an announcement in Tamil by Tamil Nadu Government's program in the evening, no other news paper today has carried even an obituary advertisement on this great-man.
Let us remember the Mahatma today with the following words of Lord:
For the soul there is neither birth nor death at any time. He has not come into being, does not come into being, and will not come into being. He is unborn, eternal, ever-existing and primeval. He is not slain when the body is slain.
(Bhagavad-Gita: 2.20)
