UCLA team maps how genesaffect brain structure, intelligence; dramatic images shed light onbrain diseases, personality differences

UCLA brain mapping researchers have created the first images to show how an individual's genes influence their brain structure and intelligence.
The findings, published in the Nov. 5 issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience, offer exciting new insight about how parents pass on personality traits and cognitive abilities, and how brain diseases run in families.
The team found that the amount of gray matter in the frontal parts of the brain is determined by the genetic make-up of an individual's parents, and strongly correlates with that individual's cognitive ability, as measured by intelligence test scores.
More importantly, these are the first images to uncover how normal genetic differences influence brain structure and intelligence.
Brain regions controlling language and reading skills were virtually identical in identical twins, who share exactly the same genes, while siblings showed only 60 percent of the normal brain differences.
This tight structural similarity in the brains of family members helps explain why brain diseases, including schizophrenia and some types of dementia, run in families.
We were stunned to see that the amount of gray matter in frontal brain regions was strongly inherited, and also predicted an individual's IQ score,” said Paul Thompson, the study's chief investigator and an assistant professor of neurology at the UCLA Laboratory of Neuro Imaging.
The brain's language areas were also extremely similar in family members. Brain regions that were found to be most similar in family members may be especially vulnerable to diseases that run in families, including some forms of psychosis and dementia.”
The scientists employed magnetic resonance imaging technology to scan a group of 20 identical twins, whose genes are identical, and 20 same-sex fraternal twins, who share half their genes.
Using a high-speed supercomputer, they created color-coded images showing which parts of the brain are determined by our genetic make-up, and which are more adaptable to environmental factors, such as learning and stress.
To create the maps of genetic influences on the brain, the UCLA scientists teamed up with the National Public Health Institute of Finland, and the Finnish Universities of Helsinki and Oulu.
In a national initiative, the Finnish team tracked all the same-sex twins born in Finland between 1940 and 1957 — 9,500 pairs of twins — many of whom received brain scans and cognitive tests.
Their genetic similarity was confirmed by analyzing 78 different genetic markers. These individual pieces of DNA match exactly in identical twins, and half of them match in siblings.
Recent research has shown that many cognitive skills are surprisingly heritable, with strong genetic influences on verbal and spatial abilities, reaction times, and even some personality qualities, including emotional reactions to stress.
These genetic relationships persist even after statistical adjustments are made for shared family environments, which tend to make members of the same family more similar. Until this study, little was known about how much individual genotype accounts for the wide variations among individual brains, as well as individual's cognitive ability.
The UCLA researchers are also applying this new genetic brain mapping approach to relatives of schizophrenic patients, and individuals at genetic risk for Alzheimer's disease, to screen them for early brain changes, and help understand familial risk for inherited brain disorders where specific risk genes are unknown.

Plunging into the roiled waters of human intelligence and its heritability, brain scientists say they have found that the size of certain regions of the brain is under tight genetic control and that the larger these regions are the higher is intelligence.
The finding is true only on average and cannot be used to assess an individual's intelligence, said Dr. Paul M. Thompson, the leader of the research team and a pioneer in mapping the structure of the brain.
The measurement of intelligence has long been a controversial issue, and even more so the efforts to tease out the relative contributions of heredity and environment.
Dr. Bruce L. Miller, a neurologist at the University of California at San Francisco and an expert on brain changes in Alzheimer's disease, said Dr. Thompson's work was "an exciting study that starts to show there are some brain areas in which there are very significant genetic influences on structure."
And Dr. Robert Plomin, a psychologist who studies intelligence at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, said the high correlation found between the size of certain areas of the brain and general intelligence "does make it harder to dismiss intelligence as some meaningless construct, as some want to do."

Scientists have for the first time linked the amount of grey matter in the brain with the ability to do well in intelligence tests. The study, confirming that grey matter really was the intellectual stuffing of the brain, also found that the amount a person had depended largely on genes. The findings emerged from a study of identical and non-identical twins who had their heads examined using a medical scanner that could distinguish between the brain's grey matter and the rest of its "white matter".
Grey matter ­ so called because it looks grey to the naked eye ­ is made of the central "cell bodies" of brain cells and has long been associated with intelligence despite there being little evidence to justify the link. White matter, however, is made up of the long filaments that extend from nerve cells and act as the electrically insulated "cables" transmitting messages over longer distances.

Just a question..these days students are doing better and better in studies....almost all students these days are coming tops and the difference between marks are just 1 mark at times.

In my sons school for one of their exams so many students shared the 1st rank mark.

When I was in school only a handful of students used to be tops..but now almost everyone is tops and the universities have no place to offer too cos of stiff competition.

So if its all about genetics how come it everyone regardless of ethnicity(in case of my country) and social standing are top scorers these days?

Weird right?

Yes! That is what I am saying..if the genetic theory is true..the number of top scorers would only increase slightly that too based solely on the increase of population..but with the tremendous amount of top scorers these days..its kind of clear that exposure,environment,parental guidance for securing a proper education is on the rise.

These days almost anyone is a top scorer and children are getting smarter and smarter.
If some had not so intelligence genes to start with..how it is possible everyone is so smart these days?

So clearly genetics isnt everything.
 
Dear Renu,

In the I I T Joint entrance exam, if two or more students get the same mark, the ranking is given in alphabetic order of names!
Hence many parents opt to name the kids starting with A and some of them with AA like Aanand / Aarthi. :decision:

This year, since many students got 100% marks in the school board exam, lottery was sought to get the ranking!

So, luck also plays a role in getting good rank in addition to securing good marks. :)
 
What is generally called as intelligence i.e, the ability to do well in tests especially the reasoning tests, is definitely not something that cannot be learnt. I have just started to focus full time on coaching students for reasoning tests such as the GRE, CAT etc and the students seem to respond well to training and considerably improve their performance.

In my view analytical ability can be acquired and honed. Intelligence is in its truest colors when mind reigns supreme i.e, you have total self control. That is something that cannot be taught but has to be learnt through life experiences and may be guidance from others. But it is a lot more self effort than in the case of acquiring analytical ability. If you can do that , that is when you acquire wisdom or real intelligence.
 
The intelligence is not only gaining money or earning job but to look into things where one can solve problems finding out the root.By scoring marks you can't say a person is very wisdom or intelligent but only can say he is able to survive in this world. Buthiyullam manitharellam vetri kanbathillai...but not all. Like that Vetripetramanitherallam Buddhisali illai
 
This is because of the mug up theory not intelligence...and the coaching style of the teacher...there is no need to get awed because of this it is going to add to more our unemployment vows than solving any perennial problem related to human society.

When others scores high..we say that they are not intelligent but I am sure if a person related to us had scored high..then we would say he/she is intelligent.

We have to be fair to everyone and acknowledge intelligence in everyone.

BTW everyone wants to survive in the world by acquiring a job..tell me how many people actually solve any problems with original thought?

Most people just studied what another person found and did not come up with anything all that new.

From that Chandrababu song you quoted "Not all intelligent men attain success and not all successful men are intelligent"

That song was talking about IQ...actually IQ alone is not enough for success.. EQ too is needed.

When we say Buddhi mostly we mean only IQ..EQ is often forgotten but actually true Buddhi also includes EQ which we often neglect.

Tiny tots are able to handle smart phones and i-pads!

A college has announced that students with a score more than 99% will get admission! Howzaat? :dizzy:

Mugging up stuff is very much an Indian way of studying.

When I went to India for MBBS I was surprised to see some of my Indian friends mugging up stuff word for word at times without even understanding.

That was the first time I ever saw mugging in my life cos out here we dont study like that.

We read..understand and then reproduce what we studied in our words and not word for word like some students do in India.

But anyway a top scorer whatever said and done..even with the best ability of mugging he/she does need some at least above average intelligence to get those marks.

I am not sure if any of the aspects of the brain or body can relate to intelligence. Intelligence is an aspect of the mind in my view and so these studies are not figuring out anything substantive about intelligence. But, if instead of identifying specific genes with specific traits, a study can figure out how the interactions of the aspects of the body determine traits, then I would say that the study is credible. Till then such studies would be very incomplete and even misleading.
 
Most scientists who solved the problem like Einstein, Newton or social scientists like VINOBA BHAVE never had any formal study. Even Kamaraj didn't have any formal study.How can you say that they are not intelligent or don't have world wisdom?...Wisdom is different from scoring marks..it concerns for the welfare of the humanity and applying common knoweldge instead of applying one's self interests to gain money and fame. Most of the IIT's research are becoming useless because they never address any of the concerns of the problems of the nation

Agreed...you are right..a study to figure out interactions all all aspects of body and mind and its effect and influence on the total outcome would be really interesting.

That is my point.That is instead of seeing things in isolation, one needs to see the interactions among them to get an idea of the deeper state of affairs. Science in my view is still in its incipience contrary to the notion of many that science is very advanced, some scientists feel it is advanced enough they can play God.

Just as anything else let it take its natural course and mature and not be in a hurry
