How the BJP did the shoot-yourself-in-the-foot asana on yoga day

The fracas over the vice-president’s absence and alleging Rajya Sabha TV’s blackout of the event took some sheen off the event, says Ankur Bhardwaj
23yoga-asana1.jpg

International Yoga Day was celebrated the world over on Sunday. In Delhi, the prime minister participated along with an estimated 36,000 people at Rajpath. After months of planning and a strong build-up, it became a major success in event management, something the PM can take full credit for. After all, the government of India, under the leadership of Narendra Modi, was attempting to make it a feat worthy enough to be mentioned in the holy book of governance, the Guinness Book of World Records.

Similar events were held across the world, most notably at Times Square in New York, where mass yoga classes with thousands of participants, have been held on this day -- the occasion of summer solstice -- every year for the last 13 years.

The Rajpath event -- and the run-up to it -- enjoyed saturation coverage in India, with every news channel broadcasting images and various government departments vying with each other to highlight their participation in what was clearly an event close to the PM’s heart.
The elation however turned into anger for supporters of the government when some Bharatiya Janata Party supporters alleged that Rajya Sabha TV had failed to telecast event.

This was followed by BJP General Secretary Ram Madhav questioning (and later retracting) whether the event had been blacked out on RSTV and why Vice President Hamid Ansari had skipped the event entirely. It was also suggested that the vice president resign because Rajya Sabha TV, which comes under him, had blacked out the coverage of PM’s pet event.
It did not matter that both the assertions were false. The event was covered by RSTV in its entirety while the Vice President’s office clarified that Ansari did not attend because he had not been invited to the event. The controversy that raged was a result of false assertions by senior journalists and leaders of the BJP.

The entire brouhaha revealed two underlying beliefs. One, that the vice president was not allowed to abstain from the event, if he had been invited and that if he did not participate, he had to resign. And two, Rajya Sabha TV had to ensure private news channels-like coverage of the event and that its management had no freedom to decide on programming.
When Madhav questioned the VP’s absence from the event, he was asserting that the VP had no right to choose whether to attend an event or not. What if the vice president had been invited and had chosen to not participate in the event for whatever reason? This interrogation of the VP’s participation had a dangerous subtext. If you are not doing government-mandated yoga, are you loyal enough?
.........................

Ram Madhav and others of his party can decide whether patriotism is so cheap as to be decided on the touchstone of performing yoga in front of cameras, and autonomous television channels will be judged on the basis of their toeing the government line.

In light of the attacks on the vice president of India and the television channel he controls as part of his Constitutional position, it would not be unfair to expect the government and the ruling party to publicly apologise to the vice president. But going by PM’s response to serious allegations of wrongdoing against Sushma Swaraj and Vasundhara Raje, we will only get what Modi often mocked Manmohan Singh for: a thundering silence.

NaMo may go, BJP may be forgotten, 'achhe din' may never come and congress may get back into power muft (free!), but this yoga comedy will be a permanent reminder to future generations about how foolish our people (and its rulers) were!
Nearly 50% of our population is below or just above the poverty line and the government instead of devising ways to give them enough nutritious food, is spending money on such frivolous things. Does not this make Congress look more noble, at least for a fleeting moment? At least, even the emergency during Indira Gandhi's times resulted in very good increase in food production and industrial production.

I hope there is something like "daridraasana" which can be prescribed for all the poor people of this world!

Naturally, when Ram Madhav did not see Hamid Ansari doing the Ardhmatsyendrasana and Setubandasana on Rajpath on Sunday, he felt the same way about him as Hedgewar did about the community: A Muslim not doing yoga? Has to be a traitor.
Rafiq Zakaria’s book Indian Muslims. Where have they gone wrong? quotes from Guru Golwalker’s book We or Nationhood Defined.
According to Zakaria, Hedgewar’s successor wrote: ‘Muslims and Christians have no place in our national life unless they abandon their differences, adopt the religion, culture and language of the (Hindu) nation and completely merge themselves in the national race. So long, however, as they maintain their racial, religious and cultural difference (with Hindus), they cannot but by only foreigners.’
In other words, if you oppose any of the RSS’s beliefs, or for that matter boycott yoga functions even if you are not invited, you are a foreigner and your loyalties do not lie with India.
The least Ram Madhav could have done was to find out why the vice president was not there at the International Yoga Day celebrations; instead he decided to shoot first, and ask questions later.

There are other Ram Madhavs, but they operate with different Avatar.

There was mischief writ clearly between the lines of BJP general secretary Ram Madhav’s tweet that Vice-President Hamid Ansari did not attend the International Yoga Day event at Rajpath on Sunday. The insinuation was not lost on anyone, and the cyber crowd took it up to malign the Vice-President and to denigrate the country’s second highest constitutional office. One part of Ram Madhav’s observation, that the Rajya Sabha TV blacked out the Yoga Day event, was wrong, and the other part about Ansari’s absence was ill-informed. Finding that he has no defence, Ram Madhav has withdrawn the offensive tweet, but the episode has exposed the crude and dangerous mindset of the higher levels of the BJP leadership. Ram Madhav is not a fringe element, he is a mainstream party leader with important responsibilities. If he invents a communal issue where none existed, is there any surprise that the Adityanaths and the Sakshi Maharajs go so overboard on all issues?
..............................
That is why the attack on the Vice-President was especially wrong and a mere withdrawal of the tweet does not undo the damage done by it. To claim that the issue is dead with the withdrawal is to refuse to disown and make amends for it. The government and the BJP leadership should apologise for the belittling of the high constitutional office and insult of the person who holds it.

Though I am a hindu, it has always been my view that the RSS/Jansangh/BJP is not conducive to peaceful progress of the country. Congress ruled and failed to give us a good government. Its last phase of UPA was particularly bad.

People thought (only 30% of the voters thought so) that BJP and more particularly, NaMo's leadership, will bring in a change for the better, and brought it to power. But, alas! the people have been completely fooled! The NDA is only the other side of the UPA coin.

Hindus have no strong and powerful leader to take care of them. Hence, one has to look for the available one.

Added to this, partition turned out to be a misadventure. This has aggravated Hindus' problems further.

Ansari has acted more as a Congressman & is interested in doing their bidding (as he was reappointed as VP by Sonia's coterie)....Yoga day has come as a perfect setting for him to pull the rug under NaMo which Modi better watch out

President Pranab Mukerjee too did not get an invitation, but he inaugurated ans participated in a yoga event at rashtrapathi bhavan. Obviously VP had other plans and international yoga event is not in the list.

Sonia and family took the easy step of running away to foreign countries to avoid embarrassment of decorating a modi led function.

Ansari's absence from Yoga Day celebrations was questioned by senior BJP leader Ram Madhav which created a controversy. Minister of State for AYUSH Sripad Naik had said Ansari was not invited as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief guest at the Rajpath event and inviting Vice President to it would have breached protocol. The row got a burial after Naik tendered apology over the controversy.

Even BJP party official when they are wrong apologies, but some party mouthpiece keep babbling lies in this site, without embarrassment.

When the president (not invited) organises and participates, VP has kept away. Not sure whether he got invitation from president or not.

Running away from issues and pot shots is the trademark of sada log! All creatures do not evolve, especially when there is a strong aversion to India, Hindus and its soft culture.

Karunanidhi, jayalalitha, vijaykanth and thousands of leaders organised and took part in some way. So far no news has come out (in media I visit) on VP's participation.
