How to view Panchangam ?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Dear friends,

Can anyone throw light on how to view Panchangam ? For eg. As per today's Panchangam it reads as follows :

dasami 17.45 (P.M.1.16); Pooram 33.59; (P.M. 7.46) Thiya 51.50.

Kindly tell me in detail about the nalligai calculation and what the above timings denote.

thanks.

regds.

Smt. Uma,

The first thing to bear in mind is that one Panchangam may not agree with another when it comes to the details, timings, etc.

That said, it looks as though the Panchangam which you are citing gives the ends of the tithi (Dasami), Nakshatra (Pooram) and (I presume, but not sure) the Thyaajya period for the day. One Naazhikai is 24 minutes of time, so two and a half naazhikais make one hour. Taking the tithi example, it spans a duration of 17 naazhikais and 45 vinaazhikais (60 vinaazhikais make one naazhikai) during the day. The hindu day commences at sunrise and if we work backwards from the end point given as 1:16 PM, we find that the commencement has been taken as 6:58:48 AM. Madras sunrise today is 6:05 approx. The sunrise time of 6:58:48 will correspond to some place in western punjab or of that longitude. Kindly find out for what location is the Panchangam calculated.

If you make a detailed study of how Panchangam is calcualted, you will find that even a Panchangam ostensibly made for your bery locality can at the best give you only a rough and ready idea. And what all beliefs we hold in regard to tithis, nakshatra, yoga, thyaajyam, Rahukaalam etc., have only the status of superstitious beliefs.

If you have further doubts, if any, about Panchangam, kindly post further.

Dear Uma,

Now you know how to use the panchangam.

The following link is very useful for panchangam of any place on earth! Try it out...

I got the correct birth star of my grand daughter, born in Boston, using this panchangam. :thumb:

Hindu Panchangam

To day's sun rise is 6-10 AM. dasami 17- naligai and 45 vinaadi. one day =60 naligais=24 hours. 30 naligai 12 hours. 15 naligai=6hours. 10 naligai=4 hours and 5 naligai= 2 hours. one naligai =24 minutes; 21/2 naligai = one hour. for 17 naligai--- for fifteen naligai = 6 hours; for 2 naligai 48 minutes; 45 vinadi= 3/4=naligai= 18 minutes. so 48+18 minutes= 1hour 6 minutes; for 15 naligai 6 hours. 6+1-06=7-06+6-10 (sunrise time)13-16=1-16 pm.

pooram star=33.59 naligai=34 naligai= 30 naligai 12 hours+ 4 naligai 1hour 36 minutes(24x4) sunrise 6-10 am. today+1hour 36 minutes=7-36 pm.

For rough idea multiply "naazhigai" by 4 and add it to Sun rise time. You get the standard or clocktime approximately. For specific purposes, the purohits will or should help you.

Dear Sir,

Is is not "Multiply nazhigai by .4 (0.4) and ......... " - because one nazhigai is 24 minutes!

Say today's Kettai is 11-41. Multiply it by 4 and you get roughly 4.5 and add this to Sun Rise 6-12 and roughly you get 10 o'clock plus. This is just rough calculation to know off your mind.

Dear Sir,

You are multiplying 11-41 by 0.4 and not 4.

Am I correct?

11-41 is not decimal figures. Nor I suggest any maths work. Just to have rough mental sum where accuracy is not considered. Multiplying the figure 11 by 4 you get 44. Add this just 4 (leave the first digit 4 alone) to sunrise with some excess (for 'vinaadi' or minutes). For Muhurta nirnayam, etc. you should work out mathematically. This is just to help some wild but curious mind.

Dear Sir,

Multiplying 11-41 by 0.4 is not a big math at all. It is just multiplying by 4 and adding a point before the last digit.

The rough calculation of 45 as written by you will be 4.5 ! :thumb:

P.S: I am reminded of a comedy math puzzle told by my father, who was a medical practitioner.

காலே அரைக்கால் விசிட்டுக்கு நாலே அரைக்கால் ரூபாய் என்றால் ஒரு விசிட்டுக்கு எத்தனை ரூபாய்?

(kAlE araikkAl visit-tukku nAlE araikkAl roobAy endrAl oru visit-tukku eththanai roobAy?)

Answer tomorrow, if no one gives it! :)

Probably I should give the answer, since no one has answered it for more than one day!

nAlE araikkAl = 4 + 1/8 = 33/8

kAlE araikkAl = 1/4 + 1/8 = 2/8 + 1/8 = 3/8

For 3/8 visits, the payment is 33/8 rupees.

Payment for one visit = 11 rupees!
