How you got your name?

Each one of us has got a story to tell how we were named.

In those days usually Grand pa name or grand ma name is given (if they are no more) or some family deity’s name is given to new born.

My father was a Postmaster; when I was born, he was working as Postmaster in Thirukoilur Post office.
In those days Post masters family used to live in the house attached to the Post office.

I was born there, in the house attached to Post office Thirukoilur, A small TempleTown near Thiruvannamalai.
UlagalanthaPerumalTemple is very famous in that town; so my parents decided to give me one of Perusal’s names: Padmanabhan!!!

In those days, delivery and after care is usually taken care of by elder women in the family, also Delivery Ayyas!!

Please share how you got your name?

Well I got my name cos my mother liked the name Renuka.

She got some facts mixed up and thought that Renuka is one of the names of Seeta so she wanted a daughter to be like a Seeta!

Then many years after naming me she found out that it is the name of Parashurama's mother.

Anyway the name Renuka is derived from the word Renu which means micro/small particles/dust.

My grandmother was instrumental in naming me. She had a friend called "Jaya" who was apparently a very successful lady in all spheres... she and several others whom my grandma noted that had a named called "Jaya" lived successful, happy lives... So my grandma was very sentimental and wanted to name me some name starting in Jaya, and since plain Jaya was old-fashioned, she and my mom named me "Jayashree" to have a modern flare.

Usually Sree or Lakshmi is added to the name to make it Mangala Name.

One kid in my extended family was to be named 'Jaya Muththu Meenakshi' but the sAstrigaL objected saying that it has 8 letters in

Tamil. When the grandmother of the kid asked to add 'Sree' at the beginning to make the letters 9, it was also objected since only

names of Gods should have 'Sree' at the beginning. So, I suggested 'Jayasree Muththu Meenakshi' which was readily accepted! :thumb:

She has one lengthy name for sure! I think the actual results (astrological, numerological) will apply based on what would happen to be her 'nickname' used commonly... whether it is 'Jayasree' or 'Mutthu' or 'Meenakshi'.

My family, though have given me a beautiful name, always shorten it to an annoying 'Jaichee' or 'Jaichu' and they keep calling me that even at this age... :-(

Tamil Brahmins usually gives another pet name not connected to the original name, Like " AMBI' BABU, PITCHAI, like that..

One man in my relation (he must have passed away now) was nicknamed 'Paappaa' (baby) and was always called that! As little children it used to be very amusing to call him 'Paappaa mama'!

Some nicknames in my extended family:

Chammu, Chinchu, Chinni, Chintoo, ChOtu, Jugloo and Bubble(!!)

They all sound like NI nicknames Raji mam! Or they must be the nicknames of youths or children of current generation, am I right?

Jayashree reminded me of a few more names! There is PAppA pAtti, ammALu pAtti, kunju pAtti and chelli pAtti in our circle! :)
