Virtual Reality is a small and fast growing market, and the technology behind it is moving at a fast pace, and new players are making their debut in the field.

Now HTC, with its impeccable manufacturing skills and Valve, with its understanding of gamers and a large userbase are partnering up to announce the HTC Re Vive, a new Virtual Reality Headset. And it isn’t just another run of the mill VR Headset, as it offers some pretty nifty features.

Each eye will be subject to 1080p 90fps goodness, which is pretty good. And it is fitted with the usual set of sensors (gyroscopes, accelerometers, laser position tracker et. al), so it can track your moments so as to adjust the game environment accordingly, making everything a lot more realistic and immersive. Now all this is possible with the Oculus Rift, nothing new here.

What’s new is that the Vive sports some currently unknown technology allowing users to literally get up and move around a room, while moving around in the game simultenously. It is full on body tracking, and it isn’t exactly clear how this is being accomplished.

What we do know, is a rough understanding of the tech behind it. It seems there will be something called Base Stations, which help track your moments across a room (upto 15×15) precisely.

It is supposed to plug into your PC, not your Smartphone like some of the other VR Headsets out there, meaning more horsepower, more realistic gameplay and a better experience overall.

And this partnership has scored itself some big-name supporters, including: Dovetail Games, Vertigo Games, Owlchemy, HBO, Lionsgate and Google

HTC promises that a Developer Edition will be available soon, and that the consumer version will release before the end of this year, which is a pretty good release timeline. We will get more details at GDC, which is taking place next week.

What do you think? Does the Re Vive have the spice needed to take over the Virtual Reality space?
