Ilayaraja's son Yuvan Shankar Raja converts to Islam

Ilayaraja's son Yuvan Shankar Raja converts to Islam : South, News - India Today

Popular music composer Illayaraj's younger son, Yuvan Shankar Raja, has converted to Islam.

Though the rumour was going around for quite some time, Yuvan, a music composer, confirmed this in a tweet.

There were rumours that Yuvan, who was married twice, was now going to marry a Muslim woman.

However, he has denied the rumours.

"I'm not married for the third time. The news is false, and yes, I follow Islam and I'm proud of it," he said.

Yuvan also tweeted: "My family supports my decision and there is no misunderstanding between me and my dad".

Yuvan, 34, has composed music for 100 films till date.

His 100th was a Tamil movie, Biriyani.

Sources close to Yuvan say he first informed his father about his decision to change his religion.

"Initially, Ilayaraja was shocked but later he reconciled," says a source close to Yuvan.

Repeated attempts to reach Yuvan failed and after two hours, he sent an SMS to India Today Online saying he was busy and would get back after some time.

A music critic close to Yuvan told India Today Online that the composer was disturbed for quite some time and was longing for solace.

"I think he has embraced Islam because it gives him the much needed inner peace and absolutely there is no need to hide that. He himself has confirmed it in his tweet," said the critic.

Yuvan got married to his longtime friend Sujaya in 2005. But they got divorced in 2007.

In 2011, he married Shilpa. But the second marriage also went through turbulence.

Sources in the industry say his second wife has gone to London and is living there with her parents.

Meanwhile, the death of Yuvan's mother two years ago added to his agony.

"This had a telling effect on his career too. On the one hand, his married life did not go well while on the other hand, he lost his mother and did not have a good relationship with his father," said a musician who has worked closely with Ilayaraja.

He said Ilayaraja objected to Yuvan's attitude on many things.

"At one point, Ilayaraja moved out of his house and started living with his elder son, Karthick Raja, also a music director. Some months ago, Ilayaraja suffered a heart attack. So I think all these developments played havoc with Yuvan's mind."

That word "love" elevates the relationship, no body needs to change for love. Sex, procreation to be legitimized for society needs this legal framework called marriage. Marriage in any religion, and country needs certain demands and this charade of religious conversion is one option.

So what? It will neither affect us nor the cinema industry!!

I don't think it is worth any discussion here!

It will be a huge shock for Ilayaraja who follow the Hindu religion and deeply involved in aanmeegam activities. But not getting inner peace in the current religion is unbelievable. Anyway, God bless him.

Dear RR ji,

Just say if he was TB and he converted?? Then this thread would have been the most active thread!LOL

Renuka

you rightly said. However, there are three categories of humanbeings 'Upper' 'Lower' and 'middle' class. Upper class does not bother about anything and they do what they like. Following certain religion or adopting rituals are only show off for them. Lower caste - nobody is going to talk about them, so no matter where they are and how they are. It is only the middle who keeps gossiping and worrying about the gossip knowing fully well worry is like a rocking chair, keeps you busy and takes you no where.

Dear RR ji,

I can imagine how the debate would have gone.

There would have been a few groups..one group feeling that culture and Hindu Dharma is on the decline and hoping for a savior and another group saying that its his choice and no one has the right to decide another person's faith in the name of secularism.

One group might suggest Yuvan become an Agnostic or Atheist instead.

Some might start posting situational songs too!LOL

Then the caste system will be dragged in and blah blah blah.

The thread will go on and on and "inactive" members will become active again and members that have left will take on a new Avatar and "incarnate" to join in.

Some members might get red inked and sulk for a day or two..then join in the fight again.

Then finally someone will PM Praveen and the thread will get closed.

If some one feels he would be comfortable in seeking the divine in a particular Religious code,
then let him follow the same. But first the change should happen inside the person, otherwise
purpose will not be achieved by the person.

Is this not sad? That we have laws on the table that discriminates against citizens to such an extent that they have to change their very identity in order to comply with the law and their way of life. I wonder how they would have resolved this had they been born in a nation that practiced a uniform civil code.

It is high time that we established a mheans of establishing a cohesion and community based on our religion. We have so much to offer in terms of living a fulfilling life, remedying for past actions, scriptural evidence that we are not alone etc., Why then are we not available to help our own in our religion? Other than going to temples what else of a community do we share as a religion? Unless we belong to some cult or the other and even there allow ourselves to be exploited! Each temple, at least the private ones, should have trained people to counsel devotees on their problems. Our temples should become more than just a place of worship. They should become a place of volunteering. A place where people get to know one another as fellow pilgrims. How many of us who go to temples interact with fellow temple goers? What binds us is so much stronger, and has lasted eons longer than what seeks to unbind us. We either swim together, or we get destroyed one by one.
