India Today Best City Awards 2014: Chennai bags top honour

Chennai emerged as the best overall city in the country at the second edition of the India Today Best City Awards 2014 held in New Delhi on Friday. Kolkata was awarded the best city when it came to crime rate and safety, while Surat in Gujarat came a close second. In the education category, Chennai again emerged as the best city, while Thane won the award in the environment category.

The survey of cities was commissioned last year by the India Today Group.

Speaking at the ceremony, India Today Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie said, "When we commissioned the survey, smart cities were still a gleam in the eyes of most urban planners." He expressed pleasure over the fact that urbanisation was now the top agenda of this government. Citing the example of the mayor of Nagpur becoming the chief minister of Maharashtra, Aroon Purie said, "This shows the rising importance of the city structure in our politics."
