The number of Indian students in the United States increased by 6 percent to 102,673 in the academic year 2013-2014, reversing a three-year trend of their declining numbers at American campuses. But Chinese students continued to surge into the US, edging up to 300,000.

The annual "Open Doors" report on international student traffic in and out of the US shows that nearly one in three foreign students on US campuses is now from China (31 per cent) compared to only around one in eight from India (12 per cent). China, India, and Korea (8 per cent) between them account for more than 50 per cent of the 886,000 international students, who contributed $27 billion to the US economy.

The modest reversal in the Indian student inflow into the US belies earlier reports that there has been a 26 per cent spike in their numbers. In fact, after peaking at nearly 105,000 in 2009-2010 academic year, Indian student population in the US dropped to 96,754 in 2012/2013 as other destinations such as UK, Canada, Australia, and Europe hawked their educational wares before the continuing US allure kicked in this year.

I'm curious to know why so many Asian students are in the US to study MS programs. They say, even for such graduates, it had become very, very hard to find suitable and immediate employments following course completion within US. With so many courses available in India from top-notch colleges, why do students then choose an MS from USA? This not only refers to Indian students but all Asian students, including the Chinese.

I was told by usually knowledgeable people that the latest trend in Indian corruption is to ask the bribe-giver to see that the bribe-taker's son/daughter gets educated abroad and gets a degree like M.S. Hence, from the data in the OP, it may be surmised that the US education has become the most sought-after mode of official corruption in India.

I thought with more and more women getting well-qualified working for MNC's and such, the dowry problem is nearly eliminated! Now I see it has shown its ugly head in a different form! How will Mr. Modi 'clean' and 'transform' and 'elevate' India, when its core problem lies elsewhere?

No it is not for post graduate study alone, Indian students are coming for under graduate study. I know of parents who send their kids for study to USA. This is not bribe it is hard earned money from business people.
The local collage (a b-level school) has collaboration with Christ collage Bangalore. They have joint degree program. They have 40 children who come for 1year study the fee is $60,000.00 + room $100,000.00 + food and incidental. There is no dearth of takers. Almost all universities have tie up like this with universities all over the world.

Earlier Indians would come with some scholarship, now that is less.
I met this kid in this program, his family is from Coimbatore and they are farmers. It was all paid legally.

Wow! Unbelievable! Can't believe for an Undergraduate study someone's willing to pay that much to send their child to a foreign land when there are wealth of top-notch facilities available within India.

I'm reminded of someone I met here recently who's been here just past 1 or 2 yrs who kept repeatedly asking me why we did not send our son to India for studies as it is expensive here!

2 opposites of the spectrum! :)

There was an article in Times Of India.
A girl who got 95% mark in school could not get admission in Delhi University, but she got admission in Brown with scholarship. Brown and Delhi university have a tie up, so she can finish her studies in Delhi if she wanted.

Dear Prasad ji,

I wrote M.S. due to my ignorance, but my observation applies to even undergraduate (i.e., any college education after secondary school in India). Our people being very creative, they have perfected this "system" which leaves absolutely no trace of corruption! Please try to verify from reliable sources, I am sure of this because one news is that the idea owes its origin to Rahul Gandhi's education in the US and how it was financed. Subramaniam Swamy used to say more about this.

Many prefer to send girl children abroad for studies abroad as safety of the girl child is an issue in india in additon to competition.

well off do not mind putting students in UG twinning prigrammes where these students both male and female can finish last year of graduation abroad in some university

with project work also abroad.

this is a stepping stone to work later in US or go in for MS there.

foreign degree gets more recognition in india , if they have to return to india later .

they get easily employed in MNCs more for their knowledge of english and social skills than academic excellence.

most Nationalised banks are waiting to dole out money to these types as edu. loans which many later default with impunity.

many not so well off parents even mortgage or sell their lands or property to finance children.

some of these parents are in dire financial straits facing livelihood issues.

Sir,
I am a "local" family for some of these kids. I have first hand information. These kids do not have to pay in Dollars, they pay to Christ collage in Rupees. It is the arrangement between the US university and the Indian collage.

[h=1]US-bound tech students: 4 Indian cities in top 10[/h]Hemali Chhapia,TNNThere is a popular wisecrack among engineers in India—one leg in India, another in Air India. Most of them graduate and fly off to pursue a master's. Little wonder then for the US, as many as four Indian cities are among the largest senders of students who want to wrap up their education with an American degree in STEM — short for science, technology, engineering and maths, according to Brookings report.

These Indian graduates are likely to get to spend more time in the US with President Barack Obama clearing the new immigration policy. The optional training programme, which allows F-1 (student) visa holders to work full-time in the US for up to 29 months after receiving an American bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in STEM, will be relaxed further.

Of all international students flying to the US for an education, most sign up for either a business management course or an STEM programme.

Collectively, the STEM fields account for 37% of all F-1 visa approvals. Among foreign STEM students, 31% are from China, 27% from India and 5% from South Korea, according to the Brookings report.

Hyderabad sent 26,220 students to America between 2008 and 2012, and 20,840 of these attended STEM classes. As many as 91% of the students from Hyderabad flew out for a master's, and only 4% for a bachelor's degree. The vast majority were studying for computer and information sciences (about 9,100) and engineering (about 8,800) degrees.
