Vijay Chokalingam, the brother of the actress Mindy Kaling (whose real name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam), has written a book about his experiences posing as a black man, in order to take advantage of positive discrimination policies and gain acceptance to medical school.
The book, titled Almost Black, will describe how, between 1998 and 1999 its author, an Indian American, "shaved my head, trimmed my long Indian eyelashes, and applied to medical school as a black man".

Interesting read. Mindy Kaling herself presents an interesting conundrum. On the one hand she does not try to whitewash her Indian heritage (unlike Bobby "Piyush" Jindal). However in her TV sitcom, her milieu is all white. Have to sell to mainstream America after all, for whom an "exotic" girlfriend makes the situation interesting.

In CA there has been a backlash against the state univs discriminating against the high achieving Asians. However once the Chinese mobilized, the Hispanic bill proponent assemblyman backed off quietly. After all, money talks.

heard that in texas, there is an 'unofficial quota' on indian sounding names' admissions to medical schools. dont know if it is true. because i heard from a father whose daughter was denied doctor admission there.

my niece is studying at harvard. i find all her classmate chums are either south asian or chinese. next time i meet her, am inclined to ask if there are any whites or hispanics or blacks in sufficient numbers at harvard.

same query will go to my nephew at mit.

i heard and dont know if this is true, that 30% of cambridge and oxford are south asians. one muslim female student, that the south asians work hard and do well while the whites party and drink beer. though the whites get better of the jobs.

i have heard the same thing here in tamil nadu. from the rural kids, that the city kids with their jeans and english get the plum jobs, even though the village students may score more in the exams.

i think it is the same in toronto and canada in general. asian kids ie chinese and south asians get more than their population percent of seats in medical and engineering colleges. this has cut deeply into the jewish kids, who dominated these before, and who replaced the white non jewish kids starting from early 1950s, when quotas limiting jews were removed.

in the early 1970s, when most of the asian kids were immigrants themselves, the jewish establish, i was told got over the high mark gateway by introducing interviews, which the asian kids they claimed did not do well, and which was necessary for patient empathy.

now canada grown first and second generation asian kids behave just like whites and are assumed to have the same 'empathy' as the others. and still continue to get overwhelming percent of seats in medicine and engineering. wondering if eventually the west would go like singapore, ie allocating seats, based on your population percent.

I simply love Mindy Kaling..she is part Tamil and part Bengali and she rocks!

I used to love her sitcom The Mindy project.
