Infosys does away with dress code, keeps it casual for all working days

1 Jun, 2015

BANGALORE: Software major InfosysBSE -1.80 % has done away with its dress code starting today, in an attempt to engage better with its employees. It means Infoscions can wear jeans and casual clothes all working days, instead of just Fridays. This is the latest in a series of moves by Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka to connect better with employees and arrest attrition.

Infosys sent an email to all employees regarding this development last week. 'From Monday, June 1, you can flaunt your smart business casuals all week long! This was a change that many of you had voiced and requested on various platforms, so we are really excited that it is official now!' the mail said.

Further, the company said it believed that each of its employees is empowered to make the right decision regarding dress code. Culture-wise, this move has significance considering that a majority of Infosys employees are in their twenties, fresh out of college.

Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka himself always wears a black t-short teamed with a jacket in comparison to the previous leadership who often wore Infosys monogrammed shirts for important events such as results and media interactions.

Last year, Sikka relaxed the company's long-held rule that said employees needed to wear ties after a number of employees asked him to scrap this rule. Infosys' rivals, Wipro allow employees to wear casuals only on Fridays whereas Cognizant relaxed the dress code a couple of years back.

It probably comes only as a minor incentive to motivate employees to make them feel 'at home'. I have heard horror stories (from 2 of my nieces who were both employed in India in IT field) how companies expect them to work 10 + 4 hrs and more towards completion of deadline, for the amount they pay as salary! Probably companies could relax on this a bit rather than focusing on dress code. Just my opinion.

Yucks! Casual wear everyday..that would be so boringly plain.

Dressing smartly to work boosts our mood to work..may be Fridays or Saturdays can be casual but not everyday.
A sloppy dresser usually has a sloppy mind too.

Manufacturing companies prefer a standard dress code..I feel where creativity needs to thrive a uniform dress code stifles that and IT companies need lot of that...I think Infosys wants to nurture innovation and creativity...This decision will give freedom to employees...Even flexi work timings help in a similar fashion
