We make fun of Bengali people too!

When Mr. Venkatraman wanders in a veranda, his Bengali Boss will ask him,

'Benkatrama! Benkatrama! Bhy do you bhandar in the bheraandhaa?' :D

Namaskaram,

2 lessons I learnt about English as a kid:

1. That someone called the city of 'Pune' as 'peon'!

2. That someone addressed a person who just left the place as 'passed away' instead of 'passed by'!

Yes, I am amazed at the quality of our English education in India that none of us make such mistakes, that is so commonly possible when learning a foreign language!

By the way, my hubby's boss when introducing a new employee, called him 'Mr. Satturman", it turned out it was one Mr. Sethuraman!

It is very hard for foreigners to get to speak any of our Indian languages too, but they are not ashamed to make mistakes and be adventurous in it! :)

i dont know how to handle this thread, but feel it does demand a post :)

no matter what, all over the world, barring india, it is agreed, that the first language of instruction should be the mother tongue. self was taught in tamil medium for 4 years, before my parents moved to a new neighbourhood, where all the kids went to convent schools. so, mee too went to convent school, english medium, back in 2nd class.

lost two years, no regret there. eventually my anglo indian high school teachers turned out to be the best in their fields, and my english teacher d.o.perry, is one teacher i owe all in my life.

still the 4 years of tamil, inculcated a love of the language, which lingered all through my 55+ years when i last discontinued it. during my teens i read ponniyin selvan and now, at this stage at 64, am a serious reader of modern tamil literature.

the ones who did best in my iit class, were those, who had their education in rural areas of india, and with their mother tongue. the most numerous were convent educated guys like mine. i am also amazed at the fundamental understanding of stuff by those who are taught in their mother tongue. both in chennai, and in bihar, where i saw really rough edged guys, having an understanding of IC engine, all through working with their hands, and without any knowledge of english.

now even tamil nadu state schools are english medium. oh well, dont know what else to say, except that somewhere, we have turned he wrong path?
