Interview: Uthradam Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the former King of Tranvancore.

Some excerpts from the interview given by the King of Travancore to Padma Rao Sundarji of Der Spiegel, and published in Hindustan Times in 2011: His respect for hindu values are clearly enunciated by the king.

quotes:

"So he declared our family to be Padmanabha's 'dasas', devotees. A servant can resign his job, but a dasa can do so only when he dies.

"
Thomas Munroe named himself Diwan of Travancore. When our spirit still did not flag, they brought in missionaries. But we did not get gobbled up by Western thought. We travel abroad occasionally, but it has not affected or changed our simple way of life. Why am I telling you this? So that you get an idea of how much our life has revolved around our faith, despite so many outside influences and kept us going.

"
We Indians are more educated now. But this reaction to donations inside a temple is anything but progressive. We are slowly losing our Indian identity. Money has become everything. But I am not surprised. I would rather be philosophical than disillusioned because I can't change the world.

"
It is rather difficult to explain our faith to the new world where people have none anymore. When selfishness grows, everything you do seems right, and everything others do seems wrong. It's all about what do I get, not about what do I do.

"
I would like to ask those criticizing us for donating these objects: why are they bothered about what someone else has done? What are they doing in the name of faith themselves ? Why the hot gossip over a donation to God?

"
We have a matriarchal system of inheritance. I have a daughter and a son but it is my sister's son who will be king after me. I remember a European lady visiting us. I explained this complicated law of succession to her. When she went back, she told her friends that she had not understood a word, but only knew that whatever it was, it was good for women. Kerala is slowly turning patriarchal again. That is not good. Overall in our country, we treat women as second-class citizens. When you look at a man, you are looking at a human being, when you look at a woman, you are looking at a family.

(Q:What is the feeling you get, when you spend those ten minutes at the Padmanabha shrine ? The daily communion between ruler and master, as you put it ?)

Varma
: Gooseflesh. Everything is surrendered. It is a great, elating feeling. My hair stands on end with joy. Each and every time.

'The riches belong to nobody, certainly not to our family' - Hindustan Times

There are strong hush-hush talks here that the whole problem could have been avoided if only the first attempt to inventory the items in the underground cellars had not been taken. This has to be read side-by-side with a statement by the leader of the opposition in the Kerala Assembly that it was not pAyasam in the vessel which was going daily to the palace but the treasures/gold.

Truth is extremely bitter, very often. But very admirable press interviews can be given by educated people like Uthradam Thirunal.

That means kerala opposition leaders illiterate. I am amazed that you have such inside information on all happenings in the country; this divyadrishti can be put to better use, if the fate so decrees.

If you make an anonymous call or send an email to the IT or IRS, a raid will be arranged with your presence.

Why is one so negative on all issues and blames family and community members, ancestors, scriptures respected and revered by majority and continues despite talk of retirement?

Well, life is like that.

The Kerala opposition leader is illiterate, possibly, compared to you or me, but he is intelligent enough to be a mass leader of respect. I was born and brought up in the Travancore kingdom and have been having continuous links with this area throughout. For the last 19 years I am living in Trivandrum.

I feel you are based in US and have no links to TVM, Kerala or the Royalty of Travancore. The only reason why you use derogatory words against me (I am amazed that you have such inside information on all happenings in the country; this divyadrishti can be put to better use, if the fate so decrees.

is a clear indication that you have zero tolerance for anything which differs from your own views on any matter; you come out as the ultimate law-giver of the world who has to be simply obeyed and/or applauded. I don't know your age. If you are only middle-aged, there is still some hope of your reducing your ego and coming down to the level of a normal person; but if you are a retired person, any improvement will depend on only miracles!!;)

Yes, there are many things about the treasure in the Padmanabhaswamy Temple which have not got publicity but which even the milkman and fishmonger here know. I do not want to put all those in writing either in a post or in a PM to you, because that may invite police action against me. If you take the trouble to search, you will find that this legal case started long ago in the local Magistrate's court and the petitioners were the temple employees who went against the Temple Management's decision to make a complete inventory of all the items in all the chambers underground. The case ultimately went up to the Supreme Court and if you read all the judgments you will get some idea as to whether the Opposition Leader was right and why nobody filed any defamation suit against him.

Sarang, Please don't think that you alone have the monopoly of wisdom and noble qualities in this world. He who laughs last, laughs best.

You are welcome to continue your noble work; how else one will know what is revealed to the individual in myriad forms and through unconventional routes.

These writings will definitely help in piecing together the history of trivankoor kingdom in the 21st century, and will settle the mystery of payasam vessel - whether the king brought an empty vessel to collect payasam prasadam or brought gold ornaments as kanikkai for the prasada payasam or as you claim brought an empty vessel and took back a vessel full of gold ornaments in the guise of payasam. Good plot for a movie or for tv serial.

As you can verify from my location marker that I live in india; I have a strong healthy respect for our traditions, values, scriptures, people and all connected with sanatana dharma - all sects, subsects, mathams, bhakti literature and all else. If your derogatory and insulting remarks elicit any response, you are offended.

As you once said, don't read my posts; perhaps you can apply the same rule for self.

Recently Akilesh Yadhav, CM of UP said that brahmins are discriminated and false cases have been foisted on them. He will take steps to withdraw them (of course, if he is assured of their support). Unconfirmed reports say that the brahmins of UP have agreed to perform a huge yagna to secure PMship to mulayam. Both the son and father benefit.

Another point - in our working life we were completely bombarded with zero tolerance, zero defect, zero maintenance, zero downtime, zero wastage etc. Now the emphasis is on EQ (emotional quotient) and SQ (spiritual quotient). Zero tolerance days are gone!
