Dear Sow. Uma,

Welcome to Tamil Brahmins Forum.

Basis for vegetarianism in our Society is adherence to the basic concept of Ahimsa - non violence and preference of Satvic food. Our scriptures speak a lot about Ahimsa and vegetarianism (Satvic food). To your query whether you and your sons can take Onion and Garlic, my answer is Yes, you can use them in your food. Nothing in our scriptures prohibits the use of them in food. In fact both have immense medicinal value.  Since they are considered Rajasic food, moderation is advised. Both contain odoriferous sulfur compounds which have effects of fighting and healing properties against various health problems.

In olden days after a particular age the use of Onion and Garlic were reduced or stopped according to their personal reasons. My grand mother would never eat any vegetable or root grown below earth. Her reasoning was that they are meant for animals.

Best wishes,

Brahmanyan,

Bangalore
