After seeing all episodes of Dil Se Naachein Indiawaale ( a dance from the heart dance competition)..judged by SRK,Deepika,Abhishek and Sonu Sood I feel India is not all that conservative.

There was this group of housewifes from Maharasthra who came from middle income families I supposed by seeing some aspects of their life style shown and these ladies may be into their 40's were dancing to many dance numbers and were totally happening and seemed to be enjoying themselves.

I know for sure such a scenario will never happen where I stay becos firstly people are a bit more conscious of themselves.

But here these housewives that came in various shapes from Medium to XXL were shaking and swaying away..a hips dont lie scenario!LOL

They also did not hide their fascination for the celebrities and could dance away with SRK and others.

Wow! They seemed totally at ease on stage.

Watching that made me feel really "conservative".

No matter how crazy I am for a movie star I am never going to make it this evident on stage.

I also witness many elderly ladies wishing to be hugged by SRK! They did not seem to display "motherly" feelings for him but they seem to be very "young" at heart!LOL

So India is not all the conservative I guess?

It depends on where you are in india.

India is a country of contradictions.

It simultaneously projects as a country of non conservatives with desire for adopting new fashionable attire and even middle class housewives dancing with superstars

in gay abandon in TV shows. Many girls openly inform they drink occassionally in tamil matrimony websites and openly say , the boy should accept her family as his

own etc

We also have a majority who shun all this and would like to project a sati savithri image and observe fast for husbands for karva chauth and many of another religion

cover themselves in burkhas.

Both co exist.

This is in metro cities .

But in smaller towns and villages, still life style is very conservative and it is a male dominated society.

I have heard that many women wait for the scenes where Salman or Shahrukh or Hrithik take off their shirts. Maybe less for south heroes since they often have a paunch!

I have even heard women discussing with each other about whether one should go to a live event just in case one of the Khans agrees to take off his shirt.

Women are in charge now!

When I studied in college 21 yrs ago, they used to say in Chennai some particular 2 Christian college girls were wearing shorts, smoking, doing drugs, etc, within the college campus. But there were no such girls in my college, though it was pretty trendy (esp. my dept). Mostly it is all the North Indian girls from rich business families that were this trendy and set a fashion statement everywhere they went. They were copied by some well-to-do South Indian girls too.

But as grown-ups into the real life, the data is missing as to how many went forward to have liberal or feminist views on problems faced, how many opted for divorces if they had bad marriages, how many were entrepreneurs or grew to managerial posts with family sidelined in front of career or atleast had a career for major part of the day, how many fought for womens' rights in the society, etc. Even if they did such things quite commonly, as someone else pointed out in this thread, the data comes as an eyesore that it is mostly women of high income group living in a relatively free society as in the major cosmopolitan cities that have the privilege of living a lifestyle of their dreams, the rest of the India, especially the lower income groups often live the same lifestyle (conservative) my generation lived 25 yrs ago.

What exactly is the meaning of "conservative" in this thread?
: not liking or accepting changes or new ideas.
: believing in the value of established and traditional practices in politics and society
: relating to or supporting political conservatism

dear Prasad ji,

It is always some unproven theory that the rich and famous are not conservative but middle class are conservative in India.

After watching that show I have started to think differently.

When I use the word conservative here..it means that the "hold back" mechanism that is built- in in some people.

That is to think "Should I or Should I not?"

Also in that show..Stand up comedian Bharti Singh is almost "molesting" the male judges on the show and hugging and kissing each one of them and she even asks the male judges to open their shirts and she even kisses their six packs..she sits on their laps(she is no light weight BTW).

But the crowd seems to love all these..in fact out here where I stay everyone feels Bharti Singh makes the show hard to watch but the Indian crowd in India seems to go crazy for her.

So I find it weird.

Even this time when I visited India I had lunch in a hotel where it was lunch break for a nearby office and office staff were having lunch and boy did both men and women make so much noise and laugh so loudly and totally not bothered that others might not stand their over dose of noise.

Some of them looked very traditional..wearing sarees too but they did not feel that they need to keep their voices down.

You are correct, Renu! There were a number of women who wished to hug Soorya, when he was conducting the TV program

'NeengaLum vellalAm oru kOdi!' They were ready to dance with him too! And, I had already posted the video where mAmis

were dancing dappAnkooththu, wearing madisAr, in a music competition, in 'agrahAram' round. Everyone wants to be liberal!

I can give you two more examples:

1. A kid about four years old was rather embarrassed to show her belly button, wearing a low hip pAvAdai and was constantly

pulling it above. He mom called her, pulled it down and told her that it has to be worn low hip ONLY!

2. My friend living in the U S of A told me that when she cautions her daughter to dress up modestly (whatever it means!!) she shows

photos of how the Indian girls dress up and asks her mom to :tape: !!

Shouting in get togethers has become a norm!
The more you shout, the more liberal you are! :horn:

Dear RR ji,

I feel these people do not know that one can be liberal without being a public nuisance!LOL
Many times I suspect , people associate unruly, loud behaviour with people with liberal thought and in many cases , this is an excuse to condemn them and banish them

or put them into a corner.

Deep inside , most feel jealous of people who are uninhibited and free and wish they could be like that but are afraid for various reasons.

There is a silent majority aspiring for a free ,liberal society and are feeling suffocated in the present order which is stifling.

Ladies are more in this trap .

when they realise ,they can get away , they would not mind adopting a liberal stance.

Our conservative ladies in india when they go abroad indulge themselves and dress and eat differently and are more liberal in associating with menfolk.

they return to their old avathar on return.lol

You can not bluntly generalize like this, Krish Sir!

Not many are liberal in eating whatever they find on the dining table or in associating with menfolk!

Sometimes you write disgusting posts!

Many American friends do a 'namastE' to Indian ladies whereas

SOME tambram mAmAs try to hug to whomever they are introduced!

Rajiramji
Three cheers

I was finding out your tolerance level.

And when you will let your left hook fly?

At last a protest.lol

Keep it up

I have to tell renukaji

At last RRji is taking something personal ,lol

You have phenomenal patience.

regards

Dear RR ji,

I will tell you something..I used to know a person a TB from India who accompanied her husband here....the first few months of being here she was wearing Thali/Pottu and only clad in Salwar Kameez.

Then after that I did not see Pottu on head ..only Thali on neck.

Then after that no Thali..no pottu but still Salwar kameez.

Then finally she was wearing jeans and T shirt.

Then one day I saw her in shorts too.

Some are like that Renu! What I don't like is the generalization.

One of Ram's aunts always wears sarees during her overseas trips.

She has visited several countries and is a leading mine owner in Karnataka.

Dear Renu,

I too wrote about the mAmis who wished to hug and dance with Sooya.

Some are really crazy!

Dear RR ji,

Becos mAmAs are caring and are practicing "Hug therapy" to make people feel better.

After all in the Kindness treatment thread it was proven that kindness aids recovery..so mAmAs are doing seva by making the world a better place for you and me and the entire human race!LOL

Dear Renu,

Dear RR ji,

If they want to give a motherly hug to him its Ok but from the show I saw on Zee TV no elder lady seemed "motherly' while hugging SRK..they were as excited as teenagers!LOL

I know many oldies switching to salwar kameez, jeans and kurtha claiming convenience, many hit wine at least to give company to their men , who get photographed

and later censor the photos which they consider unsuitable for domestic consumption before they get into public domain.

there is a small minority perhaps who do not enjoy the freedom which comes out of above acts and beat up krish
