Is Padmanabhaswamy Gold being pilfered?

Many countries keep their reserves of solid gold with U.S Federal Reserve. The gold and other ornaments found in the hidden caves of Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple in Trivandrum should have been accounted and duly recorded with tags . The entire process must have been duly video recorded.
Now atleast to prevent further misuse and pilferage of temple property worth millions of dollars, the treasure must be kept with Reserve Bank of India in their vaults under an escrow . A copy of the articles of gold kept with RBI must be kept with State Treasury dept. Whenever any gold article is to be got back from RBI, it should be done under the joint signatures of State Finance minister in office and not less than two Dewaswom Board members.

If the temple administration cannot protect the Gold let the RBI intervene and shift the Gold and keep this as part of the reserves..No one including the Travancore kings should be able to lay their hands on it!

As a religious person I feel sad and pained to read such news about Temples. All our Hindu Temples have rich ornaments to deities endowed by munificent donors from time immemorial. I hope they are properly guarded and accounted for by the Temple authorities.

Listing, tagging, record keeping, security are all important issues. But the ornaments, gold and precious stonesw must be kept inside the temple with proper security measures, annual verification and for use in temple festivals and periodical public view. This was the intent of the donors and kings. I remember in the old days, all the temple jewelry was put for public view every year; people of the town were generally aware of the entire stock including those that were not used in festivals. Even the kings, rulers or conquerors, did not touch the temple treasure. All temples in south have high value ornaments and must remain with the temples.

Security and transparency is the need; custody in the vaults of reserve bank and giving control to politicians and bureaucrats is not the way.

The argument - one kg of gold was stolen, so let us take and store 10000 kg of gold in government custody - is flawed. We may end up losing all the gold to opportunist and corrupt rulers and officials.

some details on the 'pilferage' stated in the report: What is missing from the report is whether the gold was used for plating the mandapam.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A city-based jeweller K Raju, who has been quoted in amicus curiae Gopal Subramanium's explosive report on Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple as having received 17 kg gold from the temple, said he was forced to sign a written statement and that whatever he had acknowledged had been quoted out of context in the report.

"Advocate Ananthapadmanabhan (nephew of the original petitioner Shankaraman in the case against the temple authorities), in the presence of the amicus curiae, asked me how much gold I had received and I said 17 kg. I clarified it was for making gold foils to cover the ashtadigpalakan (statues of guardian deities) at ottakalmandapam (the sanctum built from a single stone) and for making ornaments for the deity. He then shouted at me as to how I could receive temple gold without a work order and asked me to sign a written statement. I obliged," Raju told.

Raju said it was customary that no formal work orders were placed and that jewellers were contracted by temple authorities on the basis of oral agreements and mutual trust. He confirmed that 17 kg of temple gold was given to him when the late Uthradom Thirunal was head of the royal family and that he received an advance of Rs 10 lakh for carrying out the work. Raju claimed that the temple still owes him Rs 84 lakh for carrying out the work. "Now that the king is no more, the executors of the Trust have not released the remaining payment saying that there is no written document to prove that", he alleged.

SC orders audit of Padmanabhaswamy temple under formerCAG's watch

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the audit of Kerala's SreePadmanabhaswamy temple under the supervision of former Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai. The order came after the apex court appointed Amicus Curieand former Solicitor General of India Gopal Subramanian had made some startlingrevelations in his report to the apex court. Accordingto his report, gold plating machines were found inside the templeleading to suspicion that gold at the temple was systematically being stolen bysome 'very influential' people.

there are three groups. the royal family and management trust; the vast temple staff with left government's blessings and unionised; new element -supreme court, amicus curiae, 5 member monitoring team.

obviously under the royal managed trust, most of the modern administrative procedures may not be place and old practices are followed. no guarantee that modern methods will be corruption free. keral govt is keen to take over administrative control of all assets. what the supreme court will finally decide is to be seen.

a couple of years ago the court appointed committee was to take an inventory and estimate the value of the treasure. its fate is unknown.

i believe the italian govt wanted to audit the vatican bank without success. gossip: sonia has 10 billion euro deposits here.

As a person who grew up in Travancore and have spent much time in Tiruvananthapuram itself, my feelings are that the infinite treasure in the temple should be utilized fully (i.e., without any leakage whatsoever, if possible) for the welfare of all people of the state, now that things have developed up to the present stage. I say so because this boundless treasure comprises loot and plunder from as many as 16 or 17 native principalities or native states which were conquered by Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma (ATMV) and merged into the new "Thiruvithaamkoor" state. For nearly 300 years or more, this treasure had been augmented by donations/contributions from the wealthy strata of the Travancore society, and also from pilgrims, foreign traders and many other sources.

The Royal Family had, by all indications available to us today, studiously avoided touching any part of this immense treasure either for their own family benefit or for meeting the State's emergencies. But then those were different times, and monarchy ruled. However, the recently deceased Uthradom Thirunal Marthanada Varma was a different type and was a businessman well acquainted with the modern world. It was during his time that an effort was initiated to list out all the items of the temple treasure and to photograph each item. AFAIK, this was the starting point of rift between the Temple Employees and the Maharaja; this dispute came first before the Magistrate's Court in Tiruvananthapuram many years ago and took its own course because, at every level, the judgment was unfavourable to the Royal House and it persisted with the lawsuit to its bitter end. Had the attempt to do the listing and photographing been abandoned as demanded by the employees at the beginning itself (or, alternatively, had the Royal Family conducted a "Deva Prasnam" to ascertain the wishes of the Lord in the matter, at that beginning stage itself) perhaps things could have taken a very different course. But this idea of conducting "Deva Prasnam" came to the Royalty only when the Supreme Court ruled that the B-cellar should also be opened and items evaluated; and the Supreme Court minced no words in criticizing the Royal House for that Deva Prasnam misadventure!

Another point which is very relevant to this fiasco, is the fact that the Sree Padmanabhaswamy idol now adorning the sanctum sanctorum (this was not the idol when Vaishnava saints before 1750 or so; folk belief among 'us people' is that it was a wooden idol of a very rare kind of wood, into which the original appearance of Lord about 8 miles in length and corresponding other dimensions, shrunk when prayed to by Divakara Muni.) is not made of stone or granite. The present temple was completed only after ATMV's time and the present idol has been made of 12,008 Saalagramams specially brought from Gandaki and the idol was made by using a mixture of rare ayurvedic herbs and other ingredients called "kaTuSarkkara yOgam (கடுசர்க்கர யோகம்)" and so there is no abhishekam for the Moolavar all these centuries. (There is a special golden idol in the sanctum itself on which abhishekam is performed. But one fine day some years ago, the news spread suddenly that the idol is golden; and tourists and visitors to the temple increased visibly on account of this — to see the new golden idol which people had never even imagined all these years!!

My assessment is that the temple's downward trend commenced with this development. Not long ago, the Opposition Leader of Kerala Legislature commented that it was not "Paayasam" which was being sent to the Palace daily, but gold !

In the present circumstances, therefore, the Royal Family has no one but itself to blame for all these bizarre developments. It will, therefore, be better for the Royal Family to relinquish not only all its rights vis-a-vis the Temple but also all its responsibilities and customary duties towards the temple and cede the whole thing including the treasures to the new management committee and adopt a stoical stand that whatever the Lord desires, will happen. Personally, going by Rajiv Gandhi's famous statement that only 15 paise out of every rupee reached the poor beneficiary of Government schemes, we may expect that percentage or even less, to actually benefit the people of the state!!

Temple wealth must be spent on social causes for the people of the state is not acceptable view od aastikas or the donors who made the generous contribution. Even now people who donate gold and diamonds to the temple deity want the items to remain in the temple and used for the decoration of the utsavar or moolavar during festivals. Else they could have given the amount to registered charities if the intention is such.

There is enough money in the government treasuries for distribution. Even in the old days, in times of distress like famine, the kings spent their money and did not touch the temple wealth. Hope idiotic pseudo secular governments do not resort to this looting.

The temple belongs to Hindus. The state represents people of all religions. There is a sizable population of Christians and Muslim living in Kerala. As the temple belongs to Hindus and not muslims or christians the wealth of the temple should be used only for the welfare of the Hindus. It would be wise to get all the antique jewellery not only enumerated, listed and photographed. They should all be converted into solid gold and sold to the RBI. Keeping only the essential daily need of jewellery to be adorned on the deity, all other jewels can be either sold in international auction or converted to pure gold and sold. The funds generated this way should be spent in establishing a world class super speciality referal hospital in Trivandrum and Ernakulam where the treatment should be absolutely free for all Hindus and at a nominal charge for followers of other religions.
