The fact of the matter is, there exist NO 33 crore Gods.. The exact word that occurs in the Vedas for 'crore' is Koti which in many languages like Konkani/Marathi/Hindi literally indicate the numerical value of crore. But are we really to take that meaning?



The word 'Koti' in Sanskrit also means 'like' or 'type' other than meaning a crore. For eg Surya koti means 'Sun-like' or 'Sun type' and not 'one crore Sun's.

The number 33 comes from the number of Vedic gods explained in UPANISHAD


So here are the 33 Types/Like of Gods-:

8 VASU+10 PRANA+1 RUDRA+12 AADITYA+1 INDRA+1 PRAJAAPATI = 33
8 Vasus are - Earth, Water, Fire, Air, Sky, Moon, Sun, and Star. They are called Vasus, because they are abode of all that lives, moves or exists.


10 Pranas are - Praana, Apaana, Vyaana, Samaana, Udaana, Naag, Kurma, Krikal, Devadutta & Dhananjaya) i.e. Types of Life Forces Driving Our Bpdy.


1 Rudra/Soul -


12. Adityaas -The 12 months of a year called Adityaas. 12 Types of Sun ( 1of each month, Each having different Effect on our lives)


1 Indra/Vidyut which is also known as the (all-pervading) electricity, as it is productive of great force.ELECTROMAGNETIC FORCE


1 Prajaapati , also called the “Yajna” because it benefits mankind by the purification of air, water, rain etc YAJNA : noble deeds done by humans.


THE MASTER OF THESE 33 KOTI DEVATAS IS ONE BRAHMAN

The well researched article deserves appreciation.But it is hard to believe the 33 crore Gods theory and perhaps the coinage must have meant to mean that the all pervading Cosmic Energy is found in every human being and all creatures thought only human beings have the gift to Realise the Ultimate Reality.To denote the number of people available at that point of time they may have meant 33 crore Gods meaning all the human beings that were living at that time.It seems better to avoid the numbers and instead concentrate on One God and that will lead one to Greater heights.

In every nano-second (one out of a second divided into 100 crore equal parts!) there are so many changes happening throughout the human body and its infinite number of cells, that if we are only able to "see" all these things happening, most of us will swoon out of awe (just as what happened to Arjuna on seeing the Viswaroopam!). All these changes, processes, etc., are continuously activated by a force or power which is beyond human imagination or intellectual understanding. Hence, we, the incapable humans can imagine or picturize that awesome force as one Brahman or as ever so many small powers, each carrying out a particular set of functions. That is how the 33 categories have been named.

I don't find that the word kOTi has the meaning "like" or "type". If any reference is there please furnish. It looks as though our SlOka makers used this word in its only meaning; sUryakOTi meaning one hundred lakhs of suns, in their eagerness to overstate every good thing about their gods, but, today it has become unacceptable and repugnant to our ordinary logical frame of mind and so the article in the OP is slyly twisting facts to suit his/her purpose!
