Jaya opposes Sanskrit Week by Modi Government

My suggestion to her is to change her name to some pure Tamil name! Other wise she is committing a fraud on her own conscience! The same is true for all the Sanskrit bashers in the State starting with MuKa, Vaiko and the rest of the Tamil hegemonist gang

Jaya opposes Sanskrit week celebrations in schools - Rediff.com India News

Taking strong exception to Central Board of Secondary Education’s Sanskrit Week celebrations in schools under its ambit next month, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday said it would be appropriate to have organised a 'Classical Language Week' in each state based on its linguistic heritage.

As per the communication sent by the Union ministry of human resources and development, while the celebrations would be conducted by CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and National Council of Educational Research and Training in all states between August 7 and 13, state governments have also been requested to organise such events at the state, district and other levels.

"Tamil Nadu has a rich cultural heritage based on the ancient Tamil language. There has also been a strong social justice and language movement in the state. Hence, any official celebration of 'Sanskrit week' in Tamil Nadu is highly inappropriate", she in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

JJL has come a long way by speaking in Sanskrit during her maiden speech in Rajya Sabha to becoming a staunch Tamil nationalist!

What? What is wrong with her?

Is she that power crazy that to stay in power she will sway with her supporters and keep them happy at any cost?

I feel all those who oppose a Sanskrit week should follow these:

1)Change their names to a total Non Sanskrit name.

2)Dont go to temples cos prayers are conducted in Sanskrit.

3)Ask their wives to discard their Thalis cos it was tied around their necks with a Sanskrit mantra.

4)Death ceremonies and funerals should not be conducted in Sanskrit.

I can only think that everyone in Tamil Nadu lives and breathes Sanskrit in their lifestyle but yet prefer to be ungrateful and above all have a leader like Jaya Lalitha who would be knowing this and yet act ignorant..but how come she is Ok speaking and writing in English?LOL

In Tamil Nadu, the feeling of anti-Hindi and anti-Sanskrit are run deep, due to the fact that people think these two languages have the backing only from Bs.

People have similar feeling in respect of Carnatic Music also in Tamil Nadu.

Those who want to push these two languages in Tamil Nadu must inform the public the importance and necessity of learning. Without a practical and reasonable approach, support for these two languages in Tamil Nadu is a question mark.

Many people probably have a feeling that Sanskrit as a language is related only to chanting mantras and performing poojas. I don't know how many people in TN consider it as a language and useful for routine things as in the case of other languages.

she has to make the right noises to preempt karuna, ramdas and veeramani. She will now keep quiet and move on to other letters. CBSE is not under state control. MM joshi faced lot of criticism for brash intervention. Irani is clever enough to get things done with hands off approach. Recent events in Delhi university re 4 year degree course.
Jaya will restrict her opposition to writing letters.

JJL has come a long way by speaking in Sanskrit during her maiden speech in Rajya Sabha to becoming a staunch Tamil nationalist!

This is a wrong move and unwanted confrontation. If Chief Minister J Jayalalitha wants to celebrated Tamil Week, no one will object to it and she can do it in a grand scale like her predecessor Thiru M. Karunanidhi who convened and celebrated Semmozhi Manadu செம்மொழி மாநாடு 2010 in Coimbatore.

Sanskrit is taught all over India in many Schools under CBSE scheme. It is parent language for many of regional languages in our Country. It is not wise to politicalise Language studies and isolate ourselves from the mainstream of the nation.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Sanskrit as a language should be revived.People must support this move from the centre instead of opposing.

We have a pm who supports Sanskrit and a couple of his ministers have taken oath in Sanskrit. His budget speech summary was translated in Sanskrit. Whether it will be useful for earning a living or not, it will make life richer in more than one sense.

I find this really stupid..people in TN are wasting a golden opportunity to learn Sanskrit..its so accessible yet people want to remain aloof.

There is a webpage to email Modi for suggestions..and the 1st thing I did when he won the elections was send a email asking him to make Sanskrit studies for those residing abroad and who wish to do Sanskrit degrees via distance education from abroad easier and with less red tape.

I just hope in future its will be easy for those abroad.

People in TN are not making use of a golden opportunity.

JJ has over estimated the potential of such political decisions in TN. The TN people are no longer living in the 60‘s and the 80‘s. Many NB tamils I meet regret that they were denied the opportunity of learning Hindi. Which is felt so much when they travel to other states.

I think you are mistaken...These are open field mines in TN...The Tamil Nationalists may not get more than 30% vote...But if push comes to shove, these guys may up their ante...It will disturb peace in the country side...Obviously JJL does not want to disturb the status quo...And there are entrenched interests as well!

I agree with you! But with frayed emotions how do you see reason?

sanskrit should be made as a cultural heritage language like Latin for christians and Arabic for Muslims. Special boards should be appointed to enrich people of this country with sanskrit language and it should not be confined to a certain sect of people only.

personally i think, ther rest of tamil nadu barring the tambrams, would rather focus on the heritage of tamil hinduism. to the true tamils the writings of alwars and great saivaites like sekkizhar and thirugnanasambandar means more than the sanskrit mumbo jumbo that we hear.

it is only when sanskrit travels across the caste divide, there is a chance of its recognition in tamil nadu. politics of the 20th century played by all the parties, i think, has made this very difficult to happen.

no matter what, we see modi, in a different light, promoting hindi and sanskrit. recently rajnath singh addressed a world conference in hindi, which nobody understood. either we want to be jingoistic or be urbanely cosmopolitan and embrace the world. i think there is no via media.

the biggest hit has been south indian officers of the central government. and since modi does not owe anything to tamil nadu, these guys are left to see plum jobs bypassing them. such is reality.

the only successful story of an ancient language brought alive in the 20th century is israel's hebrew. but then, they had a strong and compelling reason for that. for the rest of the world, arabic is a working cum religious tongue. latin, sanskrit are just ancient tongues with religion/literature, but with limited following.

I studied in Hindi medium school, and I grew up in the north India. I can barely manage written Tamil.
But I have cousins who studied in TN, and do not (would not) understand Hindi or Sanskrit. This hindization of India is going to be tough on those people. I have posted elsewhere that Modi government should really think through this process of forcing Hindi.
Sanskrit is just a smoke screen, the hidden agenda is to force Hindi.

Recently a ban was imposed on Jallikkattu mainly due to the misguided efforts of PETA and overreaching judicial activism. There was not even a murmur of protest from the two main dravidianist parties. Jallikkattu is (was) a unique tamilian sport. Tamil people have indulged in this sport for centuries. What happened then to the protectors of Tamil culture and heritage? The only thing that rallies these dravidianists is hatred against things they deem as "aryan".

Excellent point - learn about this sport as well where the animal is not killed and that people of many types participate

hi

this is anothe TN vote bank politics.....just against the bjp/brahmin caste.....nothing is possible....bjp/centre govt never give

serious abt these local politics...now bjp has single majority...they will do whatever they like to do....ONLY TN IS HAVING

PROBLEM WITH SANSKRIT....NOT ANY SOUTHERN STATES...

Tamilians do get a working knowledge level in hindi quickly when they have to. Sanskrit is different. It does not compete with any Indian language, has no influence on the individual's material prosperity. Anyone who wants to experience bharat's soul first hand has to learn Sanskrit. As long as the govt provides the environment and resources for propagation of Sanskrit, it is fine. Obviously it may not be used for normal work related intercourse.

1. Sanskrit to Hindus and particularly Tamil Chauvinists is what Hebrew is to Jews. No Tamil Party-none of the Kazhagams nor the new crop of vanniar outfits can survive for a day without harping on some sort of a hatred in Tamilnadu. For kazhagams it is brahmin hatred. Brahmin hatred requires sanskrit to be hated because in the fifties and sixties an impression has been created that Sanskrit is the language of brahmins and so a language of domination of brahmins. In the contiguous state of Kerala no such hatred exists for the language. In the blinding hatred, the fact that Sanskrit is a language of Indian heritage is forgotten and is used as a stick to beat brahmins with.

2. In Tamilnadu politically the language Sanskrit and Hindi have no difference. In the hey days of anti-hindi agitation both these languages were derided as "thongu mozhi" meaning "hanging languages" because these languages have letters which look like hanging from a line. In TN the easiest way to catch the attention of people even today is to go up a stage and deliver a sizzling diatribe against brahmins liberally throwing in jokes about Sanskrit.

3. BJP has a soft corner for Hindi. It would be happy to see Hindi given the All India Official language status. This has something to do with their short-sightedness about the richness of languages, spirit of independence, love for languages etc. of the southern people of this country. The day BJP goes full speed into implementing its pet agenda it will come against the worst stonewall in its political history. And that will be end of all its political dreams.

4. The best course will be to leave the languages as they are treating them as a very sensitive subject. It would be wise to leave English as the link language that links the states of this country.

5. Jayalalitha has a need to appear to be a Tamil Chauvinist once in a while in order to remain one up on her opponent MK. All the caste chieftains that surround her and support her would like her to remain always one up on MK in the matter of Hindi and Sanskrit. Their cadres have nothing else to rally them around their caste leaders except hatred for language and hatred for brahmins. Jayalalitha is a prisoner of these circumstances from which there is no escape for her. Being born a brahmin adds to her discomfiture and extra smart caste leaders exploit this weakness.

In places I worked, meetings at all levels were mostly in aviyal form - generous blend of english, Hindi, marathi and whenever possible in Tamil too. Only the minutes was in English.

There was a report two days ago about Infosys being sued by its american employees because some of their colleagues were talking in Hindi. All meaningless because Google, internet and services will be simultaneous voice and text translation and script conversion.

The Wikipedia entry for Sanskrit seems to suggest that Sanskrit was always a literary language but has not been spoken for thousands of years. Comments?

Sanskrit was always a functional language, as in addition to aanmikam, contained source material for the art, science, politics and economics disciplines. All vaidyas, sculptors, stapathis, astrologers, court officials had working knowledge, could read and interpret original text. One could find sanskrit knowing people in every village. Hindi has acquired that status now, as even in remotest villages one can get by with a smattering of hindi.
Most of us can acquire passive working knowledge with relative ease.
