Jnanapith winner Jayakanthan dead

Firebrand writer Jayakanthan, considered a colossus in Tamil literature, died here on Wednesday night after a prolonged illness.

He was 81 and is survived by wife, two daughters and a son. He won both the Jnanpith and Sahitya Akademi Awards.

Jayakanthan never hesitated to swim against the current

Tamil novelist, short-story writer and essayist Jayakanthan significantly enriched modern Tamil literature by portraying the lives of those on the fringes society. And he shocked the same society with his nonconformist views, often questioning long-held views on women and chastity.

Sri Lankan Tamil literary critic K. Sivathamby used to say that one of the greatest contributions of Jayakanthan was the change he brought about in the “process of thinking” in the Tamil literary world.
“He wrote about the subjects not explored by others. He identified the agon, a literary device in Greek tragedy indicating conflict, in the lives of the subaltern and popularised it,” he said.

Born in 1934 in Cuddalore, Jayakanthan ran away from home to Madras and became a member of the Communist party at a very young age.

His first short story appeared in a little known magazine Sowbakiyavathi. He went on to become a prolific writer, authoring over 35 novels and novellas, innumerable short stories and two autobiographies—Oru Ilakkiyavathiyin Arasiyal Anubavangal and Oru Arasiyalvathiyin Ilakkiya Anubavangal—besides writing articles and composing poems.

His novels Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal, Oru Nadigai Nadagam Paarkiral, Yaarukkaga Azhudhaan and Cinemavukku Pona Chithalu were adapted as films. Jayakanthan himself experimented with film-making and directed Yarukkaka Azhudhaan, Unnai Pol Oruvan and Paathai Theiryuthu Paar.

His novels and short stories published in literary magazines and popular journals made him a household name in Tamil society. And in a state where Brahmins are at a receiving end, Jayakanthan viewed the community sympathetically and his works bear testimony to his views.

In the Communist party, he was close to K. Baladhandayutham. JK, as he was known, said in his autobiography that it was Baladhandayutham, just released after serving a life term, who drew him to politics with his thunderous speeches.

He took enormous pride in his skills as a writer and fiery orator. He spoke his mind candidly, undaunted by anyone or anything. At a meeting organised at Sathyamurthy Bhavan to condole the death of Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, he made the leaders squirm by lambasting Anna and the DMK.

But he mellowed down with the passage of time and DMK leader M. Karunanidhi, despite Jayakanathan’s contempt for the Dravidian movement, respected him and finally won him over. “I have always been against the Dravidian movement. But the leaders have always been kind to me,” he said at a meeting later.

He shared the passion of many CPI leaders for Nehruvian socialism and had great respect for Indira Gandhi. He later joined the Tamil Desiya Katchi launched by E.V.K. Sampath and both of them, along with poet Kannadasan, went over to the Congress subsequently.

He also edited a pro-Congress daily Navasakthi for a while.

Once his popularity as a writer declined, and as the Congress’s political fortunes too nosedived, he withdrew into a shell. Yet, his courage of conviction was something very rare, and he never hesitated to swim against the current. Long before Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, he denounced the LTTE as a fascist organisation at every opportunity, much to the chagrin of Tamil nationalists.

He wrote very little in the last phase of his life, but used to be the centre of a regular adda at his room or in his residence in Chennai.

Tamil writer Jayakanthan dead - The Hindu

Jayakanthan was my ideal writer.

I have not left out any of his works. I have read them all. He did not impress me as a speaker. I attended a meeting addressed by him at the Bombay Tamil Sangam. He was unsure about his views when questions were asked.

He was at his peak of popularity when I was still school/college going.

I owe it to my Dad and Mom for introducing me to Jayakanthan's writings. In fact they encouraged me to read his short stories and novels which were serials in the Ananda Vikatan of those days.

a writer needs a platform and Vikatan provided that to him.

Jayakanthan was a communist for a long time and perhaps I could identify myself with him wholly because of that.

Wisely he stopped writing after a certain age perhaps because after a certain age it is time to stop writing and start ruminating.

i pray to Srimannarayana to give this soul peace and sAyujyam.

I am confused!

One line says that you identify with him cos he was a communist!

I was about the exclaim Narayana! but then I saw the last line..where you are saying "Narayanat Sayujyam Avapnoti"

How come from communist to Narayana?

Are you communist or a Vaishnava?

?????

LOL. I am a vaishnava. A communist can evolve and become a vaishnava. I generally avoid talking in detail about myself. But the questions are pointed and so I have to answer. I was a staunch communist in my college days and I have attended classes conducted by party veterans about the communist ideology. But I have evolved as time never stands still. I am a vaishnava who was once a staunch communist. I still retain my communist leanings when it comes to matters pertaining to society and politics.

And read carefully I have used a "could" there. LOL.

Narayana!

I am still confused!

Since you say that once upon a time you were a communist...at that time were you only a communist when it came to society and politics? or did you once upon a time did not subscribe to the idea of religion/God?

hi

ajamila syndrome....narayana...narayana...lol

I am not a great fan of Jayakanthan's writings..He wrote some controversial stories about the Brahmin community..But he was a great humanist...When Brahmins were at the receiving end he came to their support...I admire this aspect in him..Later when I read his background my admiration turned into mutual respect

A communist has no time for God. God does not exist for him. And I was a hard core communist.

As time went by, things changed. And also something happened. And I am what I am today.

Sila Nerengalil sila manithargal - communist, Pala Nerangalil ava Vaishnava . LOL

JAYAKANTHAN is beyond comments from me a mere mortal and that too insignificant at that.

this short story is yet another of jayakanthan's keen observatory look at tambrams, laced with sympathy and understanding. i simply love it. lost count of time i have read it. like thayir saadham and naarthangai, another comfort food (of the mind this time) for me.

..... and each time, at the end, i choke and somewhere deep in me, something cries... and i savour every goose pimple i feel.

Narayana!

I think the problem lies in being HARD CORE for anything.

That is when we choose the extremes and swing like a wrecking ball from one end of the spectrum to the other only to wreck ourselves.

I have altered the lyrics of Miley Cyrus song..Wrecking Ball for a situation description!LOL

I came in like a wrecking ball
Yes, I just closed my eyes and swung
It left me crouching in a blaze and fall
All I ever did was break me
Yes, I wreck me

BTW the only thing hard core I like is...I think you can guess!LOL

Otherwise I prefer moderation.

Now I am convinced that Doctors do create a patient out of a perfectly healthy individual. LOL. You are highly opinionated. Try to do a differential diagnosis. You may (only may)get at the truth.

Doodling. LOL.

If I ignore this, you may well create a Raone out of me with another injection. So this 'doodling' dart. I am already a kandarppa shooting darts left , right and centre. Kandarppa in Raone is a deadly combination. I run. Siva Siva!!! LOL.

And what about those who live in the present and yet feel miserable that it will all come to an end and the world is going to have really marvellous days after their leaving here. LOL.

I was not talking about Ra One.

I was talking about the G One(Jeevan) that swings from either end of the spectrum of extremism and wrecks its own mind till it learns how to be in the centre and attains Sayujyam!

I have to agree with you that I am opinionated..I am starting to feel that..may be I am also getting invaded by the virus of extremism!LOL

Pahi Maam! Narayana va Shiva!LOL
