Jobs in IT sector -is it a boon?

Most tambrahm parents like their children to get degrees in computers science or IT field
they think their children can rake in big money and have a grand life style.
what extent are their expectation fulfilled?
what is the price they pay in terms of life -career balance and worklife spreading over12 hrs /day
how their family life is affected.?when one sees the divorce cases in a high court from IT professionnals , those ending up as medical cases with depression and suicidal tendencies ,is it really worth it?
What do members think.?

OK let me start
1.Most getting out of colleges get placed with big four in IT . They offer 2.5 to 3 lakhs/yr in campus placement
in dec -jan of final yr. but do not get offer until june oand actual joining stretches upto sept/oct.
they talk of 6months-1yr of training in hostels with shared room and food and he trainee is heavily charged
their take home is only 7to 8 thousand. for one year. the trg. is in locations like mysore,trivandrum .
after completion they end up on the bench waiting for work
the place of work three choices are taken. what you get is your luck
if you miss out on campus placement ,you had it . it is difficult to get in walk ins.you may also end up paying security for job.
2 what you get as work is very disappointing. in downturn in 2008
,many were on the bench and some engg IT graduates were offered BPO work
the quality of work is nothing to boast about . mostly application programming in high level language c+ etc.or support work .may be software testing or document updating .not any engr can boast about
3, salary rises has been6- 9 percent inlast 2-3 yrs and none for 1-2 years. due to downturn . the fall has been from 20 percent to this level
many who had booked flats before 2008 lost jobs -were given the pink slip due to downturn - and had to surrender flats and got into debts. some developed psychological problems, got depressed and got into medical cycles
4.working hours -average is 12 hrs a day- since clients in us or europe have to be serviced it is 8pm for ist mornig shift and 10-11 pm for afternoon shift. most prefer the 2 shift as even 1st shift employees are kept back in the evening .many take job home on weekends
the married types are not able to manage their home life effectively due to these hours. there is no extra compensation for extra work. however
they get food and transport to work places faraway and spend one or two hrs in commuting.there are no labour laws to protect their rights
5 once the glamour of IT wears off ,it is only slogging and these kids are working in sweat shops
6their marriages are under stress . many headfor breakup due to workand family demands. madras courts are full of divorce cases involving IT professionnals
is it all worth it?

Everything has its own advantages and disadvantages. The initial salaries are tempting, but on the longer run once you are over 8-10 years it becomes difficult unless you have grown well in your current organisation. No body bothers to call you for interviews and everytime you start fresh in the next company. But for women, this IT has given a very solid way to express themselves. First and foremost , safe environment to work, transport and flexible hours. Most of them end up resigning, but still it remains a good enough avenue for them. ( Another point, its given them a strong reason for complete domination ).

It is a *curse* and a *pain* in all the wrong places. Most Indian IT professionals end up in some miserable traffic jam in Garbage City a.k.a Bangalore in their brand new dented and dinged cars. Most in the US now seem to be headed to China where all sectors seem to be thriving, many return to India too. I am one of those rare IT breeds who do not belong in the IT field per-se so I find myself in no-man's land.

IT is a blessing for many sadistic managers who'd like to take out all their frustrations on hapless juniors.

The op is starting with the wrong premise.
You can switch the "IT-JOBS" to any other field that had potential or has future prospect.
Let us say medical, Engineering, legal, biomedical, or what ever is the next craze.
It is simply a matter of demand and supply.

So IT may be the flavor of the time, but will be changed.
The parents help propel their children in the direction they think the next boom is going to be. It is human to buy the edge possible.
The Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest is still at work.

I am basically from Engineering background but I shifted to IT after 20+ years of experience in Manufacturing...At higher levels what is required is domain knowledge not coding per se..Increase your technical & managerial competencies...Every 6 months you should evaluate what have learnt new

I would advice youngsters to first learn a domain (Auto/Electronics/Power/Steel/Aluminium) in as many functions as possible (Can be production/Quality/Purchase/Projects) & then shift to software..It will be good in long run!

every field has boom and fall out.....once these IT jobs for mainly US markets....now in europe/australia/ africa other condinents....

sometimes its true in india...govt job is secure....teacher is better off in small village....ANCHU KASAANALUM....ARASAANGA KAASU...


these are old generation words...its like share market...All IT companies are under market trend....very insecured and more

fluctuating...full of risks and challenges......

Agree with Mr. Prasad. Any job which is well paying will have tough hours and a stressful life. Nothing special about IT or Wall St. Even the rich Marwadi has to sit on his gaddi 22 hours a day.

I agree with you regarding experienced people. firstly,some do not get exposure to many areas in IT and in an industry with ever changing technology and products and skills required to cope with, those who do not run fast enough get left behind'.
with few years of experience ,incase you are in 33 to 40 age group you are in danger zone if you have not made it. I know one after return from US with best career profile could not get a good job even after one year.of return. all companies wanted youngsters or 5-6 years of experience.if you have networked,someone will take you. very few get based better jobs without referrals and peer group help.
for women ,it has been a boon . they have found an avenue for realising themselves and some with dream jobs [4-5lakhs] in MNCs have become economic entities in their own right.many TB bright sparks have become assertive and call the shots at work and home setting terms to boys in marriage market. I do not know about safety in workplace but flexihours and transport entices them.but pressures of home after marriage leads them into a vortex of pressures,time mismanagement and bad interpersonal relational relationship with mate and inlaws. these are the kinds which suffer most and end up with marriage counsellors and courts. without family support, [specially girl side ]they cannot survive. love marriages leads to disasters due to ego issues. add no family support,it is a bleak scenario.

I do realise there are many in It related fields with basic engg or other specialisation and IT is an enabler. these are in narrow work domain and a small market caters to them.
china is not rosy as you imagine. yuan is facing pressures. manufacturing based on export led growth is slowing down.consumption is not picking up. china is headed for a crash. in fact this is going to be next bad thing for world economy after 2008 and debt crisis of europe .
one way out is to be a generalist and widen field of operation. it is good to have more than one career option.serve you well after retirement.
taking out frustration by senior ,it is in all professions. in IT it is more due to job and home pressures

switching IT job is easier said than done. flitting from area to area I have done many times but end of it all you wonder whether it is worth it. you end up being a career refugee. unacceptable everywhere.
TBs are waiting for new crazes like biotech,nano and law.TB brain and craze for education will make their presence in these areas inevitable. probably it is good .they escape IT

I know some TB parents who have pulled their children from IT with all its attractions and pushed them into relatively less pressure fields. academics is an option though not well paid in india

marwadis face only finance pressures and long hours at business. IT pressure are of intellectual kinds . many have burnouts by the time they are 35yrs. it is a scary and real scenario. I have noted some in this forum advising buying property and having a retirement corpus by 35 years. this is for these IT guys
