Kumbhakarnaayanam!

How many times we might have heard Ramayana and about Kumbhakarna and others. We know he used to sleep 6 months at a stretch and be awake in the next "ayanam". I hope many of our members would have tried to copy him during school time, after marriage and at many critical times. It was thought of a phenomenon. But it seems it is not so. Rip Van Winkle slept for 20 years and could not recognize his place when he woke up. A girl in the UK went to sleep in April last and got up now in June. Whether she was offered coffee or tea is beside the point.

It is said to be a rare neurological disorder and about 1,000 people over the world have this problem. This is diagnosed as Kleine Levin Syndrome or "sleeping beauty syndrome"

I request members not to try to oversleep lest you might be given medication.

[h=1]Strange Sleeping Sickness![/h]
The survivors of one of the strangest epidemics of the modern world were reduced to mere frozen figures, human statues made of stone, looking bizarre and weird. These men were the victims of a strange sleeping sickness called “ENCEPHALITIS LETHARGIA”.

This disease appeared in Europe suddenly in 1915 and had spread through out the world by 1918. This strange disease took so many different forms that the doctors were completely baffled and bewildered. They thought that dozens of new diseases were unleashed at the same time! It had affected five million people!

One out of three affected persons died a miserable death soon. Some others fell into a coma, from which they never came out. Those who had survived had their personalities cruelly altered. The mild mannered and obedient children became impulsive, provocative, destructive and lewd! Yet others were transformed to “non-existing-persons” like ghosts and were as passive as Zombies.

This viral epidemic is associated with some forms of influenza. The main symptoms were double-vision and extreme muscular weakness. The other predominant traits were apathy in which a person lacked emotions and feelings. He showed a total lack of interest in what normal persons found exciting, interesting and moving. He showed no response to any stimulation.

This viral epidemic spread through the bites of Tsetse fly—belonging to the blood sucking African flies of the genus Glossina. The bite of the fly transmitted pathogenic trypanosomes to human beings and livestock!

[h=1]Is Sleep a Luxury?[/h]
Sleep is the most misunderstood thing in our lives. Some people over sleep and waste away their precious lives, while some others think it is a waste of time to sleep and ruin their invaluable health.

Sleep is Nature’s way of putting us back in good health and mental alertness. Many damages are repaired and the whole body gets tuned to good health, while we sleep.

The amount of sleep needed by each individual varies from person to person. The new born baby sleeps most of the day. As we grow, the number of hours of sleep needed is reduced. In old age, people can hardly sleep. Time seems to hang heavily and each day seems to go on and on endlessly!

An average adult needs six to eight hours of sleep per day. If he gets to sleep for less than six hours, he is deprived of enough sleep. If he sleeps for more than eight hours, he is enjoying a luxury, which only a few can afford!

My father, a doctor, used to say,” Sleep is like a drug. The more you have it, the more you want it”. Truly just as a drug is administered in accurate quantities, sleep must by had in adequate quantities, neither more nor less.

Extensive studies have proved that stress, anxiety, anger, aggressive driving and drowsy driving are natural consequences of lack of sleep, known as sleep deprivation. But this can have more serious and far reaching effects on a person.

It affects a person’s physical and mental well being and indirectly affects the person’s emotional well being also. Sleep deprivation causes tension and anxiety. Both these along with sleep deprivation affect the immune system of the body badly. The person becomes susceptible to several diseases and health disorders.

The person is unable to get anything done properly. He is unable to focus, gets confused easily, forgets important things and remains high-strung most of the time!

Persons, who work at night, must learn to make up for the deficit of sleep during the day. Pilots and air hostesses, who are always flying across various time zones, learn to sleep when they become free- be it a day or night. Otherwise they will be unfit for flying the air plane and playing the hostesses.

In order to remain healthy and happy and have an alert and focused mind, we need to get adequate sleep. If necessary we will have to make some changes in our daily schedule to ensure that we will be “bright eyed and bushy tailed like the chirpy squirrel” when we get up!

Remember, Sleep is a necessity and not just a luxury!

Kumbakarna Ayanam is world famous. :first:
There are many others who do it on daily basis
but do not get the same and fame for their achievements.:sleep:
Yes I KNOW and see many people who sleep for 12 hours or more during day
in several installments which put together works out to the same ratio
as Kumbakarna Ayanam. :rolleyes:

[h=1]Soothing Sleep.[/h]
Sleep is a natural and periodically recurring physiological state. It is characterized by the relative physical and nervous inactivity. It is also known by the lessened responsiveness to the external stimuli.

Sleep is essential for the physical and mental good health and also for their alertness. The hours of sleep needed may vary from person to person. A new born baby sleeps through out the day. An adult needs six to eight hours of sleep usually. Some people seem to go on well without sleep. But it is quite rare. Napoleon is said to steel sleep in tiny installments including when he was riding his trusted steed!

“Sleep” occurs along with many commonly used words adding rich shades of meanings to those words. Well! Here are a few.

“To go to sleep” is to fall asleep or become numb due to the pressure on a blood vessel. “To put to sleep” is to kill an animal in a humane way, to save it from excruciating pain -which is worse than death!

When two persons are “sleeping together” they are living as a “man and his wife”. A girl who is “sleeping around” is immoral in character.

“To sleep in” is to spend the night at the place of employment. But “To sleep on” something is to give it long and through considerations and with hold ones decisions till the next day!

“To sleep out” is to sleep in ones own home rather than at the place of work. “Sleeper” is a person or animal found sleeping. “Sleeper cars” and “sleeper compartments” have beds and bunks in the railway carriages.

A “Sleeping bag” comes in very handy when a person is forced to spend the night in an open area and while camping. It is a large bag with warm and soft lining and has a very long Zipper to enable the person to enter it ad zip himself to its comfort.

“Sleeping draught” is a bed time drink laced with a sedative or a hypnotic drug to induce sleep. This made into a tablet form is the famous” sleeping pill”.

“Sleeping partner” makes a large financial investment in a business but does not get involved in its management. He is also known as “the silent partner”.

A “sleeping police man “ is as effective as a police man awake– even though it is just a small hump built across the road to check the speed of the motorists.

The novel idea of “learning while” sleeping is welcome news to the students of all ages! “Sleep learning” or “Sleep teaching” is a new method evolved in which a person learns by listening to a tape while he sleeps on! The information in the tape is supposed to be absorbed by the sub-conscious mind of the unconscious sleeper.

“Sleeping Sickness” is often a fatal, endemic infectious disease affecting men and animals in The Tropical Africa. It is carried and transmitted by the Tsetse fly. High fever, utter lethargy, lack of interest in everything and total muscular weakness are the symptoms of this strange disease.

Indeed the word “sleep”–usually associated with lack of activities and consciousness– actually works wonders when combined with other common lack-luster words!

Madam you are flooding the Thread! Enough sleep is necessary for resting your system on plane level. Cells are repaired/replaced while at sleep. Body immunity is built up at sleep. Adolescents grow in height only at sleep by an inch even. Lack of sleep leads to various system problems, may be into depression. By oversleeping we lose to see so many things happening around us. That is big loss!

The word Ayanam originates from Sanskrit and it means travel.

So Ayanam is NOT a time period of six months as most people believe it to be.

Rama ayanam = travels of Rama became Ramaayanam.

The Travel of the Sun towards the North and the South is called

as the Uthara ayanam and Dakshina ayanam respectively.

I am a two-in-one person as a Gemini.
Also I do things at twice the speed of a normal woman.
So I am technically equal to four women!!!
Not just thrisaman = 3
but chathur saman = 4!
And I sleep only for 6 hours.
So the remaining calculations
you can do by yourselves! :)
