Kumki - கும்கி

Couple of days back by chance, I saw the Tamil Film KUMKI - கும்கி in the Cable TV network.(Kumki - கும்கி is strange name for a trained elephant). It is a good picture. The Story is simple and takes place in a beautiful tiny village in the hillside forest. The highlight of the film is the attachment between the Elephant and its mahout and the love between the tribal girl and the mahout. The movie marks the debut of Vikram Prabhu grandson of Sivaji Ganesan (son of Prabhu) who acts as Bomman the mahout, the main character. For the first film, this youngster has shown that he is the chip off the old block. Pretty Lakshmi Menon, is the tribal girl and has done her part well. The credit for taking such a different movie should go to the Director Prbhu Soloman who has selected stunningly beautiful locations in Karnataka and Kerala to shoot the picture. The cinematographer Sukumar has done his best to bring out the beauty of the nature in every frame of the shots. The elephant "Manikkam" has done a wonderful job in this film. Other supporting actors Thambi Ramaiah, Ashvin Raja and others have done their job well. Music by D.Imaan is pleasing.

Only point I felt negative was that the end could have been different. But over all, this film will have a good reception among the people who like to see a clean and beautiful family entertainment.

I usually steer clear of very rural type films but Kumki was amazing. Adorabe elephant, awesome acting by Vikram Prabhu and most of all what breathtaking sceneries. I'm no sure i have ever seen such amazing views in my life! I so want to visit those places in the film (minus those jungle elephants, of course)

Hello sir,yes I had a wonderful chance to see the movie .really superb,I enjoyed the film completely with my family, wow such a nice location ,music, each and every part was nice.liked thambi ramaiya inner voice ,too natural & funny. I hope the end was fine as thodas were more to their culture & true followers. Manikkam role at end was very touchy made me moved .Feel like to watch it again :first: Hero last words uttered was simply superb.-Maddham unakku eilla da mannikam, its me....:clap2:

Brahmanyan,

what a delight to read a movie review from you. just saw this movie two days ago.

was sort of disappointed though, found it dragging at times and vikram prabhu, i felt did not display emotions too good. re the ending, after the success of vinnai thandi varuvaya, these types of ending, though not keeping with the pulse of the movie, appear to have been adopted by the director, in the name of 'art'.

anyone who feel like being thrilled for 100 minutes please watch 22 FEMALE KOTTAYAM. fantastic malayalam thrilled only 100 minutes and an example of indian movie on par with world's best. :)

While there are several things enjoyable in the movie (photography, music etc), I felt that the movie made no progress for most of its length after the director set up an interesting premise. I was waiting for the movie to move into next gear but it never came. I was expecting the movie to move along the lines of hero mahout training his cowardly elephant, transforming it into a fierce, master tamer, but it was made into another love story, where there is not much scope - usual case of family/societal pressure against love marriage, closed tribe etc . As others have mentioned there have been a good number of movies with similar ending. The lyrics of the song "soi, soi" is a giveaway. So not much surprise there. Comedy while good at some parts felt repetitive and lacked originality. Overall, a decent family time pass but nothing to be thrilled about.
