What is Vattezhuththu?

I am surprised to find that the special letter 'ழ' (zha) is missing, along with a few more letters! :fish2:

The wikipedia entry is not complete. There are several letters missing and it does not have the full alphabetical chart which depicts all the variations of the characters. I can read tamil with some difficulty, but my vocabulary is extremely lacking in regards to "Pure Tamil". I can speak colloquial tamil quite easily.

The inscriptions have already been translated into english at whatisindia.com, but why only in English? It should have been done as:

Original Inscription
Tamil
English

which would have made more sense and better to preserve the writings. Anyway, things are a bit more difficult for me as I live in the states.

Thanks,

Financial Engineer

The REACH foundation is pretty awesome! Wish they had online courses...

Found a somewhat complete alphabetical chart for Vatteluttu. Unfortunately, the scanning of the book was done a bit poorly by Google and hence the critical plates are cut off! Please see attached...

Cheers,

Financial Engineer

I am very happy to live in this century because the 'Vattezhuththu' makes me scared of writing / reading Tamil!

But a few people write the modern Tamil similar to 'Vattezhuththu'!

You need a lot of patience, Sir!

All the best to you in your new venture. :thumb:

You had been to Thirumala... Have you noticed the tamil Vaattezhuthu inscriptions.. If you enter the last pragaram [ or first..?] just before the main deity you can see the inscription in tamil at the base ..Similarly there are no. of tamil inscriptions in Vattezhuthu just below the main sannithy Gopuram.. You can see them at the bottom level... It is clearly mentioned EzhuMalayan had no. of tamil kings as his devotees...

No Sir! I shall keep this in mind during my next visit.

In Ram's native village Thenkarai, near Sholavandan, there are many vattezhuththu inscriptions on the stones

all around the temple! But I could not read the fonts.

Is vattezhuthu is slightly different from what the "naadi" jyotishas read from the palm leaves? The people at "Saraswati Mahal" (library) at Thanjavur may be helpful.
