Ram Ram !!

There are no written rules and all. even though anyone can lit the pooja room lamp, it is considered to be one of the duties of a married female . Grahalakshmi to lit the deepalakshmi to worship the sree lakshmi is of high merit. there are some simple rules , if you are not litting the five faces of the lamp at least you have to lit two and none of them should face south. the oil for the lamp should remain the same till the end of that session. within a single session dont mix any other oil. if you are using a combination of oils then the combination shall be prepared outside the lamp.

Thanks,

Ram Ram !!

One word of caution, open flame is always risky. I know of two cases were people died due to fire from "kutii valuku".
Please light the lamp (even if it is flameless candle), but be sure to be overly careful.

Oil lamps is a form of light in the absence of candles before the invention of
electrical lights. It is rather a customary practice to light the deepam twice,
both in the morning and evening. Normally, it is lit in the pooja or prayer room
before the deity. In fact, our daily worship has to start with the lighting of
the oil lamp. Besides, in all auspicious celiberations, religious activities and
even in social events, one can notice function is being inaugurated with the
lighting of the lamp by the guests and others. It has a great spiritual
significance besides intellectual one too. Because Deepam signifies knowledge.
With this knowledge, ignorance or darkness in us is dispelled besides the fear is
driven out.

Deepajyotih param brahma deepajyotih janaardhanah
Deepo harathu me paapam sandhyaa deepo namo(a)stutae

The light of the lamp stands for the Unmanifest Truth as well as for Lord Vishnu
in His manifest form. Let that light of lamp remove my sins, results of
omissions and commissions.

Shubham karoti kalyaanam aarogyam dhanasampadaha
Shatru buddhi vinaas(h)aaya deepajyotih namo(a)stutae

I salute the Supreme who is the light in the lamp that brings
auspiciousness, prosperity, good health, abundance of wealth
and the destruction of foe's intellect.

This may not be a reply to Mr.Sivaraman's query, but another question on the same topic: Two oil lamps are lit outside the house,at the entrance, every evening, during the month of karthikai. Similarly, in the month of margazhi, oil lamps are lit, in the morning during the entire month. The question is - should it be lit and left near the front entrance or if a back door is available :) in the house, should it be lit there? Balaji

Dear Prasadji,

Yes safety is a major concern that's why even in my dad's house he just lights a flame in the morning for a short while and then in evening again he lights it for a short while.

In between a flame shaped electric lamp is kept on at the altar.

Even in my house my husband lighst the lamp just for some few minutes when he does the morning prayer then he puts it off cos no one will be at home till late night..hence as a safety measure no flame is kept on.

In Some houses, single threaded lamp is used and in some houses five threaded lamp is used.
Normally Ghee is preferable than Seasame oil. Some use mixed oils also which are readily
available in the shops. Panchamugam is auspicious.

I have a Panchamugam deepam just like that with Subrahmanya's Mayura vahana on the top. Thanks so much for this post. The lamp will shine bright during my prayers today.
