Maavilakku

It is a tradition in some families to light what is called the Maavilakku on Fridays of particular months of adi or during the celebrations at the local Maariamman temples. People who follow this ritual of lighting the maavilakku, do it either in the shrines in the temples or in their homes.

It is a tradition not in all families. Besides Mariamman temples people light this in their own family deity temples. And in some families who do regularly annual poojas at home, lighting Mavilakku is also included.

In some families they are doing on fridays in the month of thai or aadi. only once in a year they are doing. Some families are doing in the first or last friday in aadi or thai month. In some families they will do only in the second or 3rd fridays of aadi or thai month. Mostly in thanjavur district they are doing in their house itself. only family tradition. Some families are doing for durga, some for mariamman, and some for subramania swamy and some for thirupathy venkatachalapathy, and some for iyappan.
