Masaan - A story of clash between Modernity and Traditions

I had been wanting to see this movie set in varanasi which has won awards in cannes festival and managed it on the first day of release.

Masaan a hindi word derived from sanskrit shmashaan -the burning ghat.

The backdrop is the varanasi Harishchandraghat where Doms burn the dead.

Two love struck young couple are stuck in a tug of war between modernity and age old traditional customs and beliefs. It is a social commentary on their

changing values and sexual expression. The youngsters are the new facebook ,twitter generation having the desire to date and freely mix with each other.

One couple , The girl Devi played by Richa chadha ends up getting caught in a hotel with her boyfriend by the police and gets blackmailed for money by police to hush up

the affair,Her father a sanskrit professor is forced to pay the money to protect the honour while girl is defiant and says she has done nothing wrong as she was

in love with the boy.In the other couple case , A boy from DOM community involved in conducting funerals at the ghats besides getting admitted to engg college

falls in love with a higher caste bania girl ending with the death of the girl.

Richa's portrayal of small town girl totally acting guilt free, not being ashamed of her actions and strong enough to extricate herself from the mess and begin a

new life in another town is brilliant. She is definitely the new kangna ranaut fighting for womens causes and is a celebrity on internet now with a huge following.

she was interviewed on by Barkha dutt on NDTV yesterday at prime time,

in the parallel story, deepak choudhrys [ Vicky kaushal] a DOM s love for upper caste girl blooms in the backdrops of funeral pyres and the affair ends in his having

to perform the funeral rites of the girl as a DOM

The film is a masterpiece to be seen by all who like good cinema. The brilliant photography and music by indie rock band Indian ocean lifts the film to higher

heights.

One gets to have a good feel of life in varanasi, its people and their beliefs.

A must for all who have not gone to varanasi

A lyrical indie that wipes off the miasma of morality and caste system in a city on the cusp of change, Masaan is an engaging testament of the times we live in. Times when mobile phones and Internet have democratised aspirations but the taboos of 19th Century continue to haunt us, times when education is opening new vistas but the baggage of stifling tradition continues to haunt youngsters hoping to migrate to a more equal world.

I have been to Varanasi as a pilgrimage. But this can be anywhere in India, even in this site.
