The tech revolution has left us with many devices lying around the house. Most of us own more than one device, and now companies are realizing that it is not enough to create hardware and software for these devices.
Most devices have become commoditized, meaning that most features are available across devices, not matter their price. The space for a differentiating factor is sinking fast, and that’s why companies are looking for something different.

Well, that ‘different’ seems to be intercommunication between devices. We have devices that are these information islands, and what we want, and what the companies are trying to do is to facilitate communication between these devices to make it all more convenient.

Some manufacturers like Apple, made it such that it worked only in their ecosystem, to provide a method of seamless interaction that is so effective that it can lock users in their ecosystem. Of course, if you didn’t know, their implementation is called Continuity and is built into iOS 8.

On the other side, there are players like Pushbullet, which work on just about every platform and for just about everything. With Pushbullet, for example, you can send a link, notification or message to any Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS device.

It just makes it all seamless. Now it seems Microsoft wants to get in this intercommunications game, and it is following Pushbullet in that its implementation is cross-platform.

Microsoft is working on OneClip and it is undergoing user testing, as revealed by a Twitter user. OneClip works on Android, iOS, Windows Phone and Windows, and is basically a universal cloud clipboard.

Yes, it is just that. A program to sync your clipboard across devices. It does, however, recognize whether your clipboard has a link, note, address, etc and categorizes it accordingly, which is pretty convenient.

That’s all there is to it. It is not as feature-filled as Pushbullet, and doesn’t even compete against it directly, but yes, it is similar in some aspects.

OneClip has been undergoing user testing since 2014, and it may be announced soon. It may perhaps become a part of Windows 10.

What do you think? Can OneClip succeed?
