Minus One Life - One more ragging case

Dear PJ sir,

I agree that Ragging is the Ugliest Part of the Human Mind.

When I was in college I used to hate seeing juniors being ragged and orientation week is just another form of ragging.

My college used to have strict rules of suspension if caught ragging but even then ragging was still going on.

I feel its inhumane to rag anyone.

Joining college is stressful for a freshman..new place, new environment and away from home too.

Do we really need extra stress?

When I was a a junior my seniors tried to rag me but even though I was scared inside I still had the courage to tell them NO..I will not allow myself to be ragged.

Then word spread like wild fire that the new freshie is arrogant and fellow classmates were telling me "you are going to be sidelined and no senior is going to be helpful and give you notes etc"

I did not care cos I have my own brain to study and make my own notes and who wants to be friends with people who torture a new comer.

When I was a intern in India..my room mate was a junior Freshman a TB girl from Mumbai..a very nice sweet conservative girl.

At late night when I was asleep she would only keep her study lamp on and off the room lights cos she did not want to disturb my sleep..I was not aware that she was studying in the dark with only her study lamp till I woke up one night.

Then I told her that her eyes will get strained and to switch on the lights and I can sleep with lights on too.

She used to study so hard that sometimes she will sleep off still wearing her glasses and I would take off her glasses and put a pillow below her head and cover her with a blanket.

She used to like me so much cos I never bullied her and always made sure she was happy and comfortable.

We Seniors should understand that a Junior needs love and respect and help them through college life and not "torture" them when they step foot in college.

This gruesome murder of an innocent First year Medical Student in the name of Ragging shaken the minds of many in Tamilnadu during 1996

As sangom Sir has rightly said, this culture was copied from British; any number of Legislations is not going to curb this among Student community.

renukaji, when our daughter was doing First year MBBS in MMC , she had to face this, like you she stood firm and came out unscathed .
