Motorola announces the supposedly shatterproof Droid Turbo 2

The pace of innovation in smartphones has mostly slowed down, and we only see minor feature additions and spec bumps with each smartphone iteration, but Motorola seems to be treading its own path with its smartphones.

It was the first smartphone to use an intelligently managed processor setup to facilitate an always-on virtual assistant, and its Active Display was really unique and useful. Then there was Moto Maker, which allowed everyone to truly customize and personalize their smartphones like never before.

Now, Motorola has announced the Droid Turbo 2, and it is supposed to be shatterproof. Meaning that it would be much more durable than most smartphones on the market.

It achieves this through its display, which is a flexible 5.4 inch Quad-HD AMOLED display. The phone itself is not bendable, but the display is. This means that during high-velocity impacts (Such as when the phone hits the ground), the screen does not experience the full force and immediately shatter. Due to the curved nature of the display, it has some ability to compress when force is applied, and this makes it much more durable than other smartphones.

The top layer of the display is plastic, not glass, and there are two touch-sensitive layers, as opposed to just one on other smartphones. One is supposed to act as a failsafe in case the other is damaged. What remains to be seen is whether the plastic would impact the quality of the display.

The rest of the smartphone is pretty ordinary, with a Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM. upto 64GB of storage which is expandable, and a 21MP / 5MP set of cameras. Everything is powered by a 3760mAh battery, which supports Quick Charge and Wireless Charging (Both Qi and PMA).

It sports the now recognizable Moto design (Similar to the Moto X). This means that there are no embellishments, and function is prioritized over everything else.

It runs Android Lollipop, with an updated to Marshmallow apparently on the horizon.

It would be exclusive to Verizon, and would be available for $384 without contract. A monthly payment plan is also available. The phones would be available on October 29, and the unique thing is that Motorola would replace your device no questions asked if the display is damaged.
