A 90-seconds short film on Mundu, Kerala’s traditional garment, directed by Paul Mathew, an ad film maker based in Mumbai, has set YouTube ablaze.

The film received as many as 363,587 hits (and counting) and hundreds of comments in just a week. The short film, which was uploaded on YouTube on Sept 7, is portrayed with unconventional views, contrary to what a Malayali usually has.

Paul M. Mathew, who belongs to Muhamma, told DC that the film was made in protest over his north Indian friends and colleagues defaming the Mundu-wearing people.

They are unaware of the specialities of Mundu and how to tie it up on the waist line. Even though they were so critical of the Mundu, they wanted to more know about it, he says.

“For a long time, the idea had been in mind. In fact, I made this short film to educate my friends and colleagues about Mundu. Moreover, I wanted to register my protest against the teasing. I didn’t expect it to become a big hit,” he exclaims.

In the beginning, the short film explains the steps to be followed while wearing Mundu, and also explores its traditional use to highlight manliness.

The film says there are other uses of Mundu— it can be used to cover your head in case your reputation is not that good.

Paul, is the son of Mathew Paul who had created the widely-known Mazha mazha kuda kuda… ad for Poppy umbrella, which was made in a single day.

Besides Paul Mathew, Cibin Moothedan, Joby, Kevin, Lawrence, Vibu, Chintu and Rakesh took part in the film. Camera was cranked by Kevin Varghese and Joby and it was shot at Cameleon Creations in Kochi.
