Mylapore on Your Plate..
02nd June 2015
CHENNAI: Kalathi Newspaper Shop nestled in a corner of the busy Mylapore, is not just another newspaper shop. It sells the best rose milk in the whole city, according to Sridhar Venkataraman, co-founder of Chennai Food Walk — a group of food enthusiasts on Facebook. Never heard of it?
Then here is your chance to get a mini tour of the best small-time eateries along the streets of Mylapore. The virtual group is organising a real time food walk on June 6, starting from Mylapore Post Office and pit stopping at some of the historic, inexpensive and popular eateries along the way.
“I have been in Mylapore for the past 12 years, but it is only over the past four to five years that I actually explored the place and eateries here. While Kalathi Newspaper shop is famous for its rose milk, there is Senthil Softy which started selling ice creams a decade ago, and has now expanded with puffs, samosas, etc,” says Sridhar, who started the group along with Rupam Das six months ago. Apart from these spots, participants will get to taste the ghee-soaked sweets from Karpagambal Sweets, bajjis hot-off-the-stove from Jannal Bajji Kadai and delicious dosas from Mami Mess.
“The objective of the walk is to introduce people to the area, and let them know about the best eateries in the area, so that they can come back later,” says Sridhar, who has organised Mylapore Food Walks several times before, during the Mylapore Festival and Madras Week. “We get around 30 to 40 participants for each walk, and sometimes, it goes up to 80 or 100! There are no rules as such.
People can join in whenever they want, and even walk out in the middle if they are hard-pressed for time,” he assures. Also, he adds, “There is no fixed schedule. The walks are organised depending on the availability of people, or ahead of a more elaborate event like the Mylapore festival.”
