I am surprised to find that in the 'DasAvathAram' song in Geetha Govindam by Sri. JayadevA, Lord Krishna is missing.

The eight avtAr is given as Balarama and ninth as the Budha!

Ref:
Pralaya Payodhi Jale - Krsna Kirtana Songs

Apparently, in Jayadeva's compositions wherein he elaborates on “Dasavatara”, Krishna is not incorporated because,according to Jayadeva, Krishna is the source of all incarnations, as the lyrics says : “keshava dhrta buddha sarira” which means “Keshava who appears in the form of Buddha”. Since Keshava is another name of Krishna, that means Krishna is incarnate as Buddha.

In fact all the avatars are “keśava dhṛta…” etc

To quote from the reference link you provided:

O Keshava (Krishna ), I offer my obeisances unto You, who appear in the forms of these ten incarnations. In the form of Matsya You rescue the Vedas, and as Kurma You bear the Mandara Mountain on Your back. As Varaha You lift the earth with Your tusk, and in the form of Narasimha You tear open the chest of the daitya Hiranyakasipu. In the form of Vamana You trick the daitya king Bali by asking him for only three steps of land, and then You take away the whole universe from him by expanding Your steps. As Parasurama You slay all of the wicked ksatriyas, and as Ramacandra You conquer the raksasa king Ravana. In the form of Balarama You carry a plow with which You subdue the wicked and draw toward You the River Yamuna. As Lord Buddha You show compassion toward all the living beings suffering in this world and at the end of the Kali-yuga You appear as Kalki to bewilder the mlecchas

Here is the meaning of the eighth stanza of Geetha Govindam, Dasavatharam song:

vahasi–You wear; vapuṣi viśade–on Your brilliant white body; vasanam– garments; jalada-ābham–the color of a fresh blue rain cloud;

hala-hati– due to the striking of Your plowshare; bhīti–who feels great fear; milita– happened; yamunā-bham–the personified river

Yamunā appeared; keśava–O Lord Keśava, of fine hair!; dhṛta-haladhara-rūpa–who have accepted the form of Lord Balarāma, the

wielder of the plow (hala–plow, dhara–the holder); jaya jagadīśa hare...

Some versions include Hayagriva amongst the Dasavataras. Apart from the ten principal avatars, another 22 avatars are also given in Chapter 3, Canto 1 of the Bhagavata Purana.

Following this list the Bhagavatam states that as well as these avatars "the incarnations of the Lord are innumerable, like rivulets flowing from inexhaustible sources of water".

HE IS EVERYTHING.

KrishnA is everything seen by us and He is in everyone living in the world.

But He is best remembered by those which are the best among the things.

All the alphabets start with அ, अ ,అ, A etc.

KrishnA is the ‘akAram’ among the alphabets.

The most superior of all the ‘mantrAs’ is the ‘pranavam’ or ‘OM’.

It is KrishnA who resides in the OM.

Among all the kings who had ruled the earth, He is Manu;

Among all the revered rushis He is dEvarishi nAradA and brughu;

Among all the asurAs He is PrahlAd;

Among all the pasUs He is KAmadEnU;

Among all the birds that soar in the sky He is GarudA;

Among all the snakes He is the AnanthA;

Among all the rivers that flow He is GangA;

Among all the brahmins He is Bali;

Among all the yAgAs and yagnAs He is the easiest and most effective
japa yagnA;

Among all the warriors He is arjunA;

Among all the baktAs He is udhdhavA.

He is the ‘balam’ of all ‘balavAns’ and ‘tejas’ of all ‘tejasvees’ .

Whatever is the best in the world, is a projection of His glory, His beauty,

His strength and His form.

May be sri Jayadeva will think but venkatesh sahastranamam (1000name of vishnu) the name from 787 to 810 talk about Budha and other avataras but not about Balarama, and the sahastranama is a text that predates historical.

Some avatars are overlapping (Rama & Parasurama) and some are concurrently (Balarama & Krishna, Nara & Narayana) occured. Parasurama and Veda Vyasa are considered as Chiranjivins.

1) Balarama (बलराम, Balarama), also known as Baladeva, Baldau, Balabhadra and Halayudha, is the elder brother of the divine being, Krishna in Hinduism. Within Vaishnavism and a number of South Indian, Hindu traditions Balarama is worshipped as an avatar of Vishnu, and he is also listed as such in the Bhagavata Purana.

Twenty-two avatars of Vishnu are listed numerically in the first Canto of the Bhagavata Purana as follows:

Catursana [SB 1.3.6] (The Four Sons of Brahma)
Varaha [SB 1.3.7] (The boar)
Narada [SB 1.3.8] (The Traveling Sage)
Nara-Narayana [SB 1.3.9] (The Twins)
Kapila [SB 1.3.10] (The Philosopher)
Dattatreya [SB 1.3.11] (Combined Avatar of The Trimurti)
Yajna [SB 1.3.12] (Vishnu temporarily taking the role of Indra)
Rishabha [SB 1.3.13] (Father of King Bharata and Bahubali)
Prithu [SB 1.3.14] (King who made earth Beautiful and Attractive)
Matsya [SB 1.3.15] (The Fish)
Kurma [SB 1.3.16] (The Tortoise)
Dhanvantari [SB 1.3.17] (Father of Ayurveda)
Mohini [SB 1.3.17] (Beautiful/Charming Woman)
Narasimha [SB 1.3.18] (The Man-Lion)
Vamana [SB 1.3.19] (The Dwarf)
Parasurama [SB 1.3.20] (The Rama with an Axe)
Vyasa [SB 1.3.21] (Compiler of the Vedas)
Rama [SB 1.3.22] (The King of Ayodhya)
Balarama [SB 1.3.23] (Krishna's Elder Brother)
Krishna [SB 1.3.23] (The Cowherd also Svayam Bhagavan)
Buddha [SB 1.3.24] (The Enlightened)
Kalki [SB 1.3.25] (The Destroyer)

2) Balarama and Krishna Avataras:

Srimad Bhagavatam 1.3.23:

"ekonavimse vimsatime
vrsnisu prapya janmani
rama-krsnav iti bhuvo
bhagavan aharad bharam"

'In the nineteenth and twentieth incarnations, the Lord advented Himself as Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna in the family of Vrsni [the Yadu dynasty], and by so doing He removed the burden of the world'.

3) Birth of Lord Balarama:

Lord Balarama was born to Vasudeva and Devaki. Kamsa, the brother of Devaki and an evil king, was intent upon killing all the children of his sister because of a prediction that he would die at the hands of her eighth son. Kamsa thus threw his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva into prison, and proceeded to kill each of their children as they were born.

However, the seventh child was transferred miraculously from Devaki's womb to the womb of Rohini, who had desired a child of her own. Thus Lord Balarama's other name is also Samkarsana which describes the transfer of the child from the womb. The child was formally named Rama, but because of his great strength he was called Balarama (Strong Rama), Baladeva or Balabhadra. Thus, Rohini actually gave birth to Lord Balarama and raised him.

4) End of Lord Balarama:

Srimad Bhagavatam 11.30.26

"ramah samudra-velayam
yogam asthaya paurusham
atyaja lokam manushyam
samyojyatmanam atmani"

Lord Balarama then sat down on the shore of the ocean and fixed Himself in meditation upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Merging Himself within Himself, He gave up this mortal world.

5) Quotations on Balarama:

"Lord Balarama is the original Vishnu; therefore anyone remembering these pastimes of Lord Balarama in the morning and the evening will certainly become a great devotee of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and thus his life will become successful in all respects." - A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

"The splendor of Lord Balarama's transcendental form eclipses many millions of glistening rising moons, and the slightest scent of His boundless strength is sufficient to destroy many armies of demons." - From Appreciating Sri Vrindavana Dhama, pg. 111

6) Dasavatara:

(i) Balarama as incarnation of Anantasesha (Sankarshana):

According to the Bhagavata Purana, Balarama is said to have appeared in the Dwapara Yuga (along with Krishna) as a descent of Ananta Shesha. Balarama is counted as an avatar of Vishnu by the majority of Vaishnava movements and is included as the ninth Dasavatara in some versions, mostly Southern India, where there is no reference of Buddha.

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.1.24:

"vasudeva-kalanantah
sahasra-vadanah svarat
agrato bhavita devo
hareh priya-cikirshaya"

Synonyms:

vasudeva-kala anantah -- the plenary expansion of Lord Krishna known as Anantadeva or Sankarshana Ananta, the all-pervasive incarnation of the Supreme Lord; sahasra-vadanah -- having thousands of hoods; svarat -- fully independent; agratah -- previously; bhavita -- will appear; devah -- the Lord; hareh -- of Lord Krishna; priya-cikirshaya -- with the desire to act for the pleasure.

Translation:

The foremost manifestation of Krishna is Sankarshana, who is known as Ananta. He is the origin of all incarnations within this material world. Previous to the appearance of Lord Krishna, this original Sankarshana will appear as Baladeva, just to please the Supreme Lord Krishna in His transcendental pastimes.

Purport:

Sri Baladeva is the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. He is equal in supremacy to the Supreme Godhead, yet wherever Krishna appears, Sri Baladeva appears as His brother, sometimes elder and sometimes younger. When Krishna appears, all His plenary expansions and other incarnations appear with Him. This is elaborately explained in Caitanya-caritamrita. This time, Baladeva would appear before Krishna as Krishna's elder brother.

(ii) Buddha as 9th Avatara of Dasavatara:

Gita Govinda:

In the Dasavatara-stotra section of his Gita Govinda, the influential Vaishnava poet Jayadeva Goswami (13th C AD) includes the Gita Govinda:

In the Dasavatara-stotra section of his Gita Govinda, the influential Vaishnava poet Jayadeva Goswami (13th C AD) includes the Buddha amongst the ten principal avatars of Vishnu and writes a prayer on Him.

Gita Govinda, First Ashtapathi, Verse 9:

"nindasi yajna-vidher ahaha shruti-jatam
sadaya hrdaya darsita pasu ghatam
keshava dhrta buddha sarira jaya jagadisa hare"

O Keshava! O Lord of the universe! O Lord Hari, who have assumed the form of Buddha! All glories to You! O Buddha of compassionate heart, you decry the slaughtering of poor animals performed according to the rules of Vedic sacrifice

I used to wonder..when Devaki and Vasudeva knew that Kamsa would kill all their babies why did they still go on having kids?

Why couldn't they practice some form of contraception or at least consider celibacy instead of seeing babies being dashed against the wall!..but they went on and on and on and on producing one after another babies.

Just like some patients whom are strongly advised not to consider having kids cos both husband and wife are strong carriers of the Thalassemic gene..but they keep on producing kids that have severe Thalassemia and keep watching their kids one after another die young in front of their eyes.

Dear Renu,

If Krishna has to be born, there should be seven children born before him, right? It is the fate that made Devaki

and Vasudeva to take such a decision. And by killing those children, Kamsa increased the sins he committed. :evil:

Dear RR ji,

7 babies need not have been born full term and then dashed against the wall.

May be the Divine drama could have had 7 miscarriages instead ..say at around 2 months of gestation..this might even go unnoticed and be thought of as delayed or irregular menses.

Only let the 8th pregnancy embryo develop till full term and let everyone think the 8th embryo is the 1st baby born.

Then Kamsa would have been even more confused also thinking that the full term pregnancy is actually the 1st baby born and not pay much attention to it and at first go itself..Kamsa gets killed!

That way....no baby needed to be dashed on the wall!

Dear Renu,

There seems to be no one like Renu to advice Vasudeva and Devaki at that time! :D

But Kamsa did kill even the first born, right?

renukaji

Your thinking is from a Doctor's angle, my thinking is just like any other common man.

Put them in separate jails till life like, one in Vellore and another in Madurai!!

Dear RR ji,

You see if the 1st born reaching full term pregnancy after the mother had 7 miscarriages (which is actually the 8th embryo) is Krishna Himself..can Kamsa kill Him?
