I had a spark on this topic, when I was casually browsing one of the recent threads. This made me seriously think over the subject and hence this brief write-up.
NATURAL DISASTERS – RATIONALE BEHIND THEIR HAPPENINGS
Why do natural disasters occur?
Physicists, geologists, oceanographers, seismologists, astronomers and other scientists have tried to find out the reasons for this question since time immemorial. While some are logical and hence acceptable to all, all other reasons have not been accepted as valid and correct by all, through the ages and across different scientific professions. Besides, philosophers and religious leaders have come out with their own explanations. A lay man is hence confused and doesn’t really know which one could be correct and real.
Is there a specific pattern in their occurrence?
Like a comet’s appearance on the sky, some natural disasters are cyclical and could be predicted with great precision. But, most of the natural disasters do happen without any cyclical pattern and could not be predicted, even with lesser degree of accuracy, despite the giant strides made in science and technology today. Human brain’s limitations have been acknowledged by all in this connection.
Can they be avoided? If yes, what can be done?
In most of the cases, they cannot be avoided; but only their evil effects and the consequential destruction they cause to life and property be minimized by forewarning and by taking other precautionary and protective steps on a permanent basis, wherever such types of disasters were experienced in the past. If they cannot be prevented, quick response by organizing rescue and relief operations is the only solution.
FROM A PHILOSOPHICAL ANGLE
When tsunami attacks shores of the bay,
filth or flowers get washed away;
animals or humans are not spared;
rich and poor all equals there.
When an inferno strikes,
good or evil it cannot be kind ;
it gladly devours all it can find;
what remains is only ashes around.
When the earth does shatter,
huts or towers no matter;
vast land turns a burial site,
no time left to rise and fight.
When a tornado swirls so quick,
it sucks in all lean and thick;
the trail it leaves makes
everyone so sick.
