No more subsidized food in Parliament canteen from January 1

HIGHLIGHTS

• Food items in Parliament canteen will be much dearer from Friday.
• Accordingly, a vegetarian thali which earlier cost Rs 18 will now be sold for Rs 30.
• And non-vegetarian thali will cost Rs 60 instead of Rs 33 earlier.
• A three-course meal will cost Rs 90 and chicken curry will be sold for Rs 40.
NEW DELHI: Food items in Parliament canteen will no longer be subsidized.

A statement from Lok Sabha secretariat on Thursday said Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has decided that the canteen in Parliament will work on 'no-profit, no-loss' basis from January 1.

The rates have been hiked as there have been controversies from time to time over subsidized food being served in Parliament when there is so much inflation in open market.

An RTI query had revealed that Parliament canteen facility got a total subsidy of Rs 60.7 crore during the last five years.

Now that the food subsidy in parliament canteen has been removed, so no one should complain about your LPG gas subsidy being removed. tit for tat. matter equals. argument concluded. All our parliamentarians should be permitted to have and display Amma Stickers.

People of this Country will certainly appreciate the revision of prices in Parliament Canteen.
However wonder where you will get a Vegetarian Tali for Rs.30/= especially in Delhi ? Even in a
Darshani Hotel, in Bangalore, we have to pay Rs.50/= for a limited meals Tali (to eat standing).
Let us hope the charges will be revised realistic.

Still the price in parliament canteen , is the cheapest to the core !

A good beginning !

The main prudence in planning a budget is ………..to augment more revenue income and reduce the expenses which ought to be curtailed.

How about food for thought?

Most of the time, proceedings in Parliament stalled due to opposition protest.

Hon’ble members more often storm into the well and ensure adjournment of both the Houses.

Whether they are serving the elected public or not, let the canteen serve them with cheap food.

MPs cannot legislate on empty stomachs.

Free food , in unlimited amounts should be given to them.

Most are MPs for only one term.

Many of them have limited means of support.

These MPs work for the masses selflessly ignoring their own families.

Even their minor lapses are noticed as they are in public eye all the time.

Very few get govt bungalows or become ministers.

We need to look after our representatives well .

We need to look after our representatives well .

While we all believe that our Parliament consisting both Houses are temples where our constitution is enshrined, at times, our M.Ps do behave very irresponsibly, insulting the democratic set up and most of the time their such acts of insulting go unpunished.

If one look into the history of how responsible our M.Ps in their behavior during the session of Parliament, it won’t be a surprise.

One M.P used a can of pepper spray against others to protest the tabling of one particular Bill.

One M.P broke the glass and microphone on the table

One M.P during the session snatched the papers from the Hon’ble Minister and tore, and threw the papers in front of the Hon’ble Prime Minister

There are number of occasions when a section of MPs were suspended for their unruly behavior.

One can even see them repeatedly slapping a marshal, sleeping comfortably while someone is vehemently arguing, watching porn from mobile, etc etc

One may ask, is it necessary that these law makers should be provided with cheap food but the answer may be that it is not that MPs alone who use the canteen, it also visited by journalists, Parliamentary Office staff of all ranks, Security personnel, guests, etc.

They are provided with cheap food mostly to block the Parliament.

Krishji,

Your post no 8 looked like a joke...Are you serious?
Most of the communist , socialist MPS are not well off .

Many BJP MPs are dependent on their working wives since they were never were in power for most of their life time

I personally know many MPs who live in legislator hostels or in north or south avenue in flats worse than than senior govt

officers flats. They can do favours to their constituents but cannot do anything for themselves. . any MP trying to get

preferential allotment of houses has been getting into troubles. and all their actions are open to public scrutiny

all politicians are tarnished with the brush of dishonesty because of a few.

they do not have a grand life as it is projected

Many are one time MPs. They do not count for much in their parties and are dependant on senior colleagues for any

largesse.

Unless one has private income, it is difficult to be an MP

When Central Government / PSU employees go on strike, proportionate wage cut would be imposed.
Why efforts could not be made to enact a similar law applicable to parliamentarians also?

A responsible citizen will think about the time that is lost during many Parliamentry sessions due to interruptions that led to pandemonium on the floor of the House, not to speak about shouting slogans, unnecessary disruptions, indulging in physical attack, causing forced adjournments, etc

It was reported that each minute of Parliament’s time costs the exchequer Rs.26,035/= (statistics relates to 2009).

It is public money and hence the law makers are expected to behave more responsibly during parliamentary sessions.

They clear bills also. they know what to clear fast without discussions.

Others go to standing committee for a later date.

No finance bill such as budget or appropriations bill critical for the nation has been held up.

bills like GST there has to be a consensus and will get cleared when modi and bjp reaches out to opposition and stops

targetting them. Our MPs have their own code of conduct.

They know what to block and what to clear besides when to do it.

They are very smart persons.

What is the productivity of Raj Sabha during the winter session?

How many bills were passed?

What is the status of Prevention of Corruption Bill?

What is the status of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code?

How much time was spent on debating?

There are lot of disruption on issues relating to Governor of Arunachala Pradesh, National herald and DDCA. Why?

How many times it was adjourned?

While one Party was anxious to pass the Bill allegedly in the interest of the nation, the other was found paralyzing the function on various ground. Why?

we are not a banana republic.

We should not keep on passing bills.

we should operate within framework of existing laws and deliver.

heavans would not fall if useless bills are not passed in a hurry. bills on corruption or bankruptcy codes may not be worth passing.

our rajyasabha elders are wise. They will not rubber stamp anything like modis supporters do in loksabha.

rajyasabha has become now the watchdog against irresponsible laws framed without thinking.

loksabha has proved to be useless due to brute majority of one party and one man rule

What brute majority....BJP has only simple majority...With allies it has a comfortable majority but not like Rajiv Gandhi's Congress which had 4/5th majority...But fact of matter is do we require these elders who are hell bent on stymieing any progressive legislation brought in by Lower House?...We cannot harp on what the current dispensation did when it was in opposition and frustrate the aspirations of the people!

We had seen Government functioning comfortably with minority strength during the period from 1991 to 1993.

It was said that suicidal streak of reforms that particular party had unleashed then had come full circle when MMS was Prime Minister displaying a similar suicidal tendency.

But crucial economic reform decisions were taken during that time and so there was no imminent danger to the government.

Most children are wise and progressive in their thinking. We do not do away with parents if they urge caution.

The upper house MPs are elderly citizens with some having years of house experience and many have far more wisdom than

first time lok sabha MPs.

Rajya sabha will call the shots in this parliament not lok sabha

Parliament is a not training Institute to impart training to first time M.Ps that too at the cost of the tax payers money.

BJP conducted courses for the first time M.Ps and have also arranged for issue of a certificate in this regard. The course was named ‘Political assistantship’. This course covers syllabus on knowing the rules of Parliament, how to raise question and how to answer the questions, etc. One has to wait and see as to how these M.Ps behave in Parliament.

This first time M.Ps before knowing the rules of Parliament and seeking guidance, they ought to know and understand the grievances of the public in respect of their constituency, who voted them to Parliament and try to find out solution to their problems.

Both the public and the media are watching and evaluating their performance.

One congress MP from Tamilnadu had represented his constituency for 3 terms from KK district. He never opened his mouth in parliament to participate in any kind of discussions. Yet he used to succeed 3 times in MP elections with the supportive votes from his own caste and persons of his religion. He was a very good person with personal touch. But performance wise, he did nothing.

very few MPs are in the limellght in both houses of parliament.

They mostly do not participate in any debate . they turn up when a whip is issued for presence.

even some do not make their maiden speech for several months in first year.

but they are loyal party men and act on wishes of the party and raise their hands or create a ruckus as instructed by party

leaders.

less than 20 % are effective members. Others ride along.

so why be critical of them.

but most have fought elections and have got elected due to their caste or party strength.

While there may be M.Ps who are very active inside the parliament, may be inactive outside and on the contrary there may be few who are very active outside, may be inactive inside the parliament by not taking part in serious discussions.

Every Member of Parliament is considered as voice of his constituency and is expected to raise issues of his contituency in Parliament through question and debates.

While there may be M.Ps who have thorough knowledge about the formalities and procedures such as Question Hour, Zero Hour, Calling Attention Motion, Adjournment Motion, No confidence Motion, Censure Motion and other discussions, there may few who are thorough with the menu of canteen too.

We have all sorts.
