A popular energy drink, produced by a company founded by an Indian-American billionaire, has come under the scanner in the US after reports of 13 deaths possibly linked to the energy shots.

However, Lucknow-born CEO of '5-Hour Energy', Manoj Bhargava dismissed the allegations against his firm as "false" and "ridiculous". The popular energy drink is being investigated by the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) after 13 deaths over the last four years were reported, citing the drink as probable cause.

The New York Times said since 2009, 5-Hour Energy has been mentioned in about 90 complaints filed with the FDA, including more than 30 that involved serious or life-threatening injuries like heart attacks, convulsions and even a spontaneous abortion.

After reading this article fear enveloped me...How about the drinks in India which come with various degrees of caffeine? Are these safe to drink?...In India Red bull is famous...So too is cloud 9, XXX etc..Children too drink these.

Every drink is a suspect. Carbonated sugar water should be consumed in moderation. High energy drinks have very high content of caffeine, and they are bad, specially for children.

Shri Gane,

We were lucky, in the generation just about to set, in that we could bring up our children in a sort of native way. The most modern drinks preferred by kids some 50 years ago were Coca Cola or Pepsi and since these were beyond the easy purchasing power (or monthly budget) of many lower middle class families like mine, these favoured drinks were once-in-a-blue-moon specials for the children. During most of the other days, they used to drink coffee/tea/buttermilk or, when available, tender coconut water.

Now many of the children who grew up this way have become the upper class (thanks to B.Tech/M.Tech degrees, the BPO boom, etc.) and even those who could not land up in US or UK or Oz, have visited the foreign countries, stayed there at least for months, if not years and such parents have adopted the foreign ways almost in toto. Their children are the captive groups for all such drinks which you name in your post.

No one knows what are all the results of these drinks but right now, I find many young boys very flabby and most of them also have Gynecomastia as the doctors say. Further, it is said that erectile dysfunction is a growing complaint among the young and not-so-young men in UK. So, we don't know for sure as to what sort of future awaits the kids of this generation.

Hello all ,I happen to come across this yesterday in my medical mail, sooner I forward to my near & dear. Its stated as 13 death ,with 33 in emergency state .Sir its not the question ,then how about in india>? .Any artificial drink, sweetend drink ,energy drink ,gym- energy/ calorie value drink......so on is all of no value to body .They play tricky game selection of name ,gimmick in the commerical adds.In general people go by names ,adds, even the popular stated d***c*** ,is full of commerical gimmick,.people .have to think and imply ( will catch you later,Iam in small break time in my work.)

The most vulnerable are the children...They think that these drinks will boost their energy ...They have this before exams to boost stamina....They have replaced Tea & coffee.

Earlier we used to get mailers about adverse effects of carbonated drinks, such as Pepsi (like it corroding a steel nail)...Atleast awareness got built...D

o we know the adverse effects of the so called Energy drinks?
