[h=1]Snowden Documents reveal that NSA was spying on Huawei[/h]

Huawei and the United States have a strained relationship. For long, the US claimed that China was spying on the US through Huawei. This caused Huawei to withdraw from business in the US last year.

In 2012, the US House Intelligence Committee released a report which stated that Huawei’s network equipment were a threat to national security .

New Edward Snowden documents show that it was in fact the US Government which was spying on Huawei.

The NSA project, named “Shotgiant” was launched in 2007 and provided the NSA with Huawei’s main servers in it’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.

The project gave the NSA access to Huawei’s internal email system which in turn allowed the NSA to read all emails going through Huawei.

The NSA also ‘stole’ source code of many Huawei products, mainly network equipment such as routers. This was done to understand their working and exploit that knowledge to spy on countries that together make up a significant 1/3rd of the world’s population.

Huawei makes many core network equipment that are being used to connect many countries such as Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Kenya and Cuba. These countries are also on the NSA’s radar and so, NSA deemed it necessary to know about Huawei’s network products for “the interest of national security.”

The documents said “Many of our targets communicate over Huawei produced products, we want to make sure that we know how to exploit these products,” .

NSA accessed Huawei’s email so as to determine whether Huawei has any connections to the People’s Liberation Army.

The NSA had successfully infiltrated Huawei. “We currently have good access and so much data that we don’t know what to do with it,” said the NSA document.

The new documents add another blow to NSA and the NSA is buckling down at the backlash by the public due to concerns of their privacy, spurred on by Edward Snowden’s revelations.

“The irony is that exactly what they are doing to us is what they have always charged that the Chinese are doing through us,” said a senior Huawei executive to the TIMES.
