Will cajoling help! How many of us will give up the privileges..It will leave a hole in our pocket of Rs 6200 per year in case we use 12 cylinders in a year and we opt to give up the LPG subsidy!

It appears to be a voluntary scheme; the ministry must release a monthly report on number of people who have opted to forgo subsidy; this may encourage more to join.

We will soon see a scroll of honor! Even if 10 lac families opt out who spend 12 cylinders the saving to the exchequer would be a whopping 620 crores! Good initiative without causing any heart burn!

A better method for a higher hit rate is to remove tax payers from the subsidy list. They who want subsidy can log in and register.

We followed this scheme for voluntary contributions to any cause - parties, tours, charity etc. An amount say 100 will be deducted from the salary, and they, who want to opt out can give their names. Sheer inertia to sign made more people to contribute even when not enthusiastic.

phasing out of kerosene subsidy in delhi is more interesting .

shiela dikshit govt gave free gas connection to poor using kerosene with gas stove and cylinder

to phase out kerosene users with bpl ration cards and discontinued kerosene supply in delhi

a good move but it left immigrant labour or others without valid ration cards who were dependent

on kerosene out of the scheme .
also kerosene [white coloured ] is meant only for industrial use without subsidy

kerosene [ blue coloured ] for household is not available in delhi

out of 2 lakh families dependant on kerosene 1 lakh with ration cards shifted to

gas but it left 1 lakh more at the mercy of smugglers who get kerosene into town from

gurgaon

and neighbouring UP. they pay market rates for kerosene.to them

Welfare schemes of govt work like this

it might be a good idea to remove taxpayers from subsidy list for gas , rice , wheat and essential

commodities

but voluntary contribution , for any cause I am skeptical. it is thuggery to deduct money from

salary without written consent.

instead of targetting employees to give up subsidised gas, oil companies can reduce the car or

vehicle allowance by 20 -30 percent to save oil. they will get far more money.

Oil companies have made 50000 crore profit bet 2007-12 as per cag. The new govt has to revise so called subsidy and give back excess collected. Source TOI.
